Herbert onder de indruk van Verstappen: "Voorspelbaarheid niet goed"

Max Verstappen en Red Bull Racing waren afgelopen seizoen extreem dominant in de Formule 1. Ze werden met speels gemak kampioen en volgens een aantal criticasters maakten ze de sport saai. Johnny Herbert is echter van mening dat hier een belangrijke nuance bij moet worden geplaatst.

Verstappen won dit seizoen een recordaantal van negentien Grands Prix. De Nederlander prolongeerde zijn wereldtitel al in Qatar en sindsdien mag hij zich een drievoudig wereldkampioen noemen. Hij bezorgde Red Bull ook de constructeurstitel en dat zorgde voor veel complimenten. De overmacht van Verstappen en Red Bull was zo groot, dat er slechts één race werd gewonnen door een coureur van een ander team.

Erkenning

Volgens criticasters werd de sport hierdoor wel heel saai en voorspelbaar. Oud-coureur en huidig analist Johnny Herbert snapt dat, maar bij Motor Sport Magazine wijst hij naar een ander punt: "Ik weet dat sommige mensen, waaronder ikzelf, zouden zeggen dat het een saai en voorspelbaar seizoen was, maar je moet Red Bull erkenning geven. De manier waarop Verstappen zijn seizoen aanpakte was heel speciaal. Elke keer als hij in de auto stapt, zit hij er bovenop. Zoals alle grote coureurs deden."

Voorspelbaar

Herbert vindt het dan ook te kort door de bocht om te zeggen dat het een saai seizoen was. De Brit heeft wel genoten van een aantal zaken: "Was dit een slecht seizoen? Het was voorspelbaar en dat is niet goed. Het racen achter Red Bull was goed, gemengd en heel erg close. Het potentieel is er, met een geweldige groep coureurs die volwassen wordt en ook steeds beter is. Red Bull is dominant, maar kan het team dat volhouden? Er zijn geen garanties."

Het zal me verbazen als Max in 2024 en 2025 geen kampioen wordt.
Daarna wordt het even afwachten of Max wel door wil met die nieuwe motoren en of Red Bull een goed torretje kan maken.

oftewel in het jaar van de roze mercedes van racing point had Max met dat ding wereldkampioen geworden, want Checo reed dat jaar een van zijn beste seizoenen en verzekerde zich van een vervolg van zijn carriere met een overwinning. het verschil met Checo dit jaar met Max is dermate groot dat er niet gesproken kan worden van dominantie van RedBull.
Het is dominantie van Max in de RedBull, Checo werd met hakken over de sloot 2e in het wk, eigenlijk alleen maar omdat Max punten bleef kapen van Checo zijn tegenstanders in dat wk door te winnen.

tis als het seizoen 1994, waarin Benetton maar 1 auto had die de dominante Williams kon verslaan, ook door een regelwijziging en het tragische verlies van een groot kampioen., maar Schumacher was de enige die die B194 aan de praat kon krijgen, Jos scoorde er 2 3e plaatsen mee, andere haalden dat niet in de tweede auto.

Max rijdt zijn contract uit en gaat teambaas/lange afstandcoureur worden.

Hangt er helemaal van af hoe 2026 eruit gaat zien, maar 6x wk achterelkaar is nog niemand gelukt, 5x wel, Schumacher zijn 3 t/m 7e titel.

“Hij reed altijd op het randje”
De dominantie van Verstappen doet Herbert denken aan iconische momenten uit de Formule 1-geschiedenis.
“Zijn dominantie is vergeleken met die van Michael Schumacher bij Ferrari, maar het deed me denken aan Nigel Mansell in 1992, in een Williams die soms twee seconden sneller was dan de rest”, geeft de Brit aan. “Mansell gaf nog steeds alles, elke keer weer - en dat was hetzelfde met Max. Hij reed altijd op het randje omdat dat in zijn DNA zit”, voegt hij hieraan toe.

Desondanks hoopt Herbert op meer concurrentie voor Verstappen in de toekomst. “Ja, hij had een dominante auto, maar hij was machtig. En hij wordt alleen maar sterker. Laten we hopen dat hij de volgende keer meer uitdaging krijgt. Daar zal hij ook van genieten.”

Gevecht achter Verstappen
Mercedes, ondanks een tweede plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap, heeft volgens Herbert een moeilijk seizoen gehad.
“Tweede klinkt niet als een ramp, toch? Maar als je het jaar van Mercedes bekijkt, was het dat wel. Mercedes zit in een moeilijke positie”, legt de Brit uit.
Over de renstal die de meeste progressie boekte, is Herbert duidelijk. “Als je naar de top vier kijkt, heeft McLaren het meest verbeterd over het hele seizoen. Het team moest een tandje bijzetten na zo'n slechte start, maar wat deed het dat goed”, vertelt Herbert.
