Ervaringsdeskundige Bottas adviseert Perez: "Zelfvertrouwen is belangrijk"

Sergio Perez is de overduidelijke tweede coureur van het team van Red Bull Racing. Ondanks dat veel mensen dit doorhebben, blijft Perez zijn pijlen richten op de wereldtitel. Valtteri Bottas kent de positie van Perez en hij stelt dan ook dat zelfvertrouwen zeer belangrijk is.

Perez werd dit jaar tweede in het wereldkampioenschap met een enorme achterstand op zijn Red Bull-teamgenoot Max Verstappen. De Nederlander kende een bizar sterk seizoen waarin hij negentien keer wist te winnen. Perez won slechts twee Grands Prix en hij wist vaak ook niet te overtuigen. Toch sprak hij vlak na het seizoen weer de ambitie uit om in 2024 vol voor de wereldtitel te gaan.

Veel kenners stellen dat Perez zich op zijn rol moet focussen. Alfa Romeo-coureur Valtteri Bottas bevond zich jarenlang in een soortgelijke rol bij Mercedes. In gesprek met Motorsport Magazin adviseert Bottas zijn Mexicaanse collega: "Een coureur moet denken dat hij iedereen kan verslaan. Je kan niet een weekend ingaan en jezelf wijs maken dat je iemand niet kan verslaan, want dan heb je al verloren. In deze sport valt en staat alles met zelfvertrouwen. Als het daaraan ontbreekt, dan kom je in een neerwaartse spiraal terecht waar je niet zomaar uitkomt. Dat zie je terug op de stopwatch."
