Bottas deelt Mercedes-geheim: "Ik was in ontkenning"

Valtteri Bottas reed dit jaar voor het tweede seizoen op rij voor het team van Alfa Romeo. De Finse coureur kon geen potten breken, maar naast de baan ontwikkelde hij zich als een kleurrijk persoon. Het is een verschil als hemel en aarde met zijn Mercedes-tijd. Bottas stelt dat hij daar in ontkenning leefde.

Bottas reed van 2017 tot en met 2021 voor het team van Mercedes. In 2017 werd hij aangetrokken als de vervanger van de plotsklaps gestopte wereldkampioen Nico Rosberg. Bottas werd de teamgenoot van Lewis Hamilton, de onbetwiste kopman van het team. Hamilton werd van 2017 tot en met 2020 elkaar wereldkampioen. Bottas kon hem amper bijbenen en hij was overduidelijk slechts de waterdrager van Hamilton.

Ontkenning

Dat was niet altijd even makkelijk voor de Finse coureur. Hij wilde voor zijn eigen succes gaan, maar diep van binnen wist hij dat dit onmogelijk was. In gesprek met Motorsport.com is Bottas hier goudeerlijk over: "Je moet in ontkenning zijn. Ik ben bijna vijf jaar lang ieder jaar in ontkenning geweest. Ik wilde ieder seizoen terugkomen en om de titel gaan vechten. Ik moest gewoon in mijzelf geloven."

Acceptatie

Bottas besloot pas in zijn laatste jaar in Mercedes-dienst om de aanval niet meer te openen. Hij legde zich neer bij de situatie: "Pas toen ik wist dat ik zou gaan vertrekken had ik vrede met bepaalde dingen. Ik accepteerde een aantal zaken. Tijdens je loopbaan maak je zulke dingen mee. Met Lewis accepteerde ik het laatste jaar pas dat ik in gelijk materiaal het over het gehele seizoen lastig had om hem te verslaan. Hij was op bepaalde gebieden de betere. Als coureur is dat lastig om toe te geven."
