Verstappen moest winnen in Miami: "Enorm belangrijk voor de titel"

Max Verstappen won dit jaar een recordaantal van negentien Grands Prix. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur werd met speels gemak voor het derde seizoen op rij wereldkampioen in de Formule 1. Verstappen is trots op zijn reeks, maar hij is van mening dat zijn zege in Miami zeer belangrijk was.

In Miami leek Verstappen begin dit jaar een lastige race voor zijn kiezen te gaan krijgen. De Red Bull-coureur kon zijn laatste run in de kwalificatie niet voltooien omdat Charles Leclerc was gecrasht. Hierdoor startte Verstappen slechts als negende, zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez had de pole position in handen. Verstappen reed een foutloze race en uiteindelijk ging hij er zelfs met de zege vandoor op het circuit rondom het Hard Rock Stadium.

Belangrijk

Verstappen laat nu weten dat dit een zeer belangrijke race voor hem was. De Nederlander stelt dat dit belangrijk was voor zijn wereldkampioenschap. In het Viaplay-programma 'Lion Unleashed 3' legt Verstappen het uit: "Het was een goede race. Natuurlijk was ik niet blij met de kwalificatie, maar vanaf plek negen concentreerde ik mij vooral op het uit de problemen blijven om daarna de weg naar voren in te zetten. Het was voor het kampioenschap enorm belangrijk om die race te winnen. Tijdens die race had ik een heel goed gevoel in de auto."

Norm

Verstappen kreeg het publiek op de banken met zijn foutloze inhaalrace. Zelf is hij nu echter iets minder lovend over zijn eigen race: "Ik zou niet willen zeggen dat het een masterclass was. Dit soort prestaties zouden voor mij de norm moeten zijn, dat is wat ik wil laten zien. Dat is soms wat makkelijker dan op andere momenten. Toen ik over de finish kwam wist ik dat dit een ongelooflijke, maar ook een belangrijke zege was."

Miami was als Spanje, een wedstrijd waarbij iedereen even stil was na afloop en zich liet herinneren hoe groot Max eigenlijk is. Kippenvel moment voor mij in ieder geval, ik zal deze race in Miami nooit vergeten.

  Miami stond ik toevallig echt op de camping. Berg en terblijt, dus niet de Oranjecamping maar wel enorm genoten van die race.
