Horner: ''Er gaan veel auto's op de RB19 lijken in 2024''

Begin 2022 had de Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner dit nooit kunnen indenken dat zijn team de bench mark zou zijn voor de rest van het veld. De Brit verwacht dan ook dat veel wagens op de F1-grid lijken op de Red Bull van 2023. Een groot compliment naar de Oostenrijkse renstal toe volgens de chef van Max Verstappen en Sergio Pérez.

"Imitatie is de grootste vorm van vleierij", vertelt Horner tegen PlanetF1. "Ik denk dat de Formule 1 op die manier werkt, dus ik ben er zeker van dat een aantal wagens op de RB19 zullen lijken in 2024. Ik denk dat wij de lat hoog gelegd hebben. We hebben binnen het team hoogtepunten bereikt die we nog nooit eerder voor elkaar hebben gekregen. De manier waarop het hele team als groep samenwerkt, met alle afdelingen die elkaar ondersteunen... Het is niet zo dat de prestaties uit één bepaalde hoek voortkomen."

De dominantie die Red Bull liet zien, en met name in combinatie met Verstappen achter stuur, had Horner nooit zien aankomen na 2021. "Ja, we waren verrast, want in 2022 werd er een compleet nieuwe set aan reglementen ingevoerd. Het duurt altijd even voordat alles tot rust komt en samenvalt. Ik denk dat we dit jaar op verschillende momenten verschillende tegenstanders hebben gezien, dus onze prestatie was de enige constante factor. Ik ben er echter zeker van dat dat volgend jaar gaat veranderen, want de reglementen blijven weer gelijk."

Toch denkt dat Horner dat de voorsprong niet veel groter zal worden dit jaar. "Natuurlijk zal er sprake zijn van kleinere verschillen. Maar het is verbazingwekkend op welk consistente niveau het team heeft gefunctioneerd. We hebben onder allerlei omstandigheden en op allerlei circuits 21 Grand Prix-overwinningen en zes een-tweetjes behaald én allerlei records verbroken door de meeste opeenvolgende zeges te pakken."

Toch prachtig, de meesten zullen met hun kopie dan een jaar ontwikkelingsachterstand hebben :)

Stiekem hoop ik wel op een veel spannender seizoen dan in 2023 ook al ben ik Max fan.

  Ditto hier. Ik heb erg genoten van afgelopen seizoen. Wat er aan ontbrak was het gevecht om p1.
  Maar voor de rest vond ik het geen slecht jaar. In de Mercedes do.inantie was het een stuk saaier vaak. Ook toen was er niet vaak een gevecht om p1, maar daar achter gebeurde incidenteel iets interessants.
  
  Overigens zou ik wel weer een seizoen willen zien waar Verstappen niet de beste auto heeft. Zeg als in 2021. Dan is de meest opwindende Verstappen te zien.

Het zou kunnen, maar een aantal, waaronder Ferrari en Mercedes gaan toch hun eigen weg. Dat kan ook niet anders omdat bij hun de basis sowieso al anders is.
