Verstappen niet geïnteresseerd in kritiek op dominantie

Max Verstappen was afgelopen jaar extreem dominant in de Formule 1. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur werd met overmacht voor het derde seizoen op rij wereldkampioen. Het boeit Verstappen helemaal niets hoe andere mensen hierover denken, hij haalt er zijn schouders over op.

Verstappen won in 2023 een recordaantal van negentien Grands Prix. De Nederlander werd met twee vingers in zijn neus wereldkampioen en hij verbrak een grote hoeveelheid records. Het was één van de dominantste seizoenen uit de geschiedenis van de Formule 1. Verstappen bleef er heel rustig onder, terwijl critici stelden dat zijn zegereeks vooral werd veroorzaakt door zijn extreem sterke RB19.

Meningen

Verstappen kan niet zoveel met die kritiek. De Nederlander maakt zich totaal niet druk om de meningen van kritische volgers. In gesprek met Auto, Motor und Sport wordt Verstappen geconfronteerd met de RB19-kritiek: "Ik ben niet geïnteresseerd in de mening van anderen. Ze kennen onze auto niet. Ik probeer gewoon mijn best te doen en dat doe ik elke keer weer. Ik weet niet hoe dominant onze auto is in vergelijking met oudere wagens. Niemand weet dat."

Afstelling

Verstappen kan er dan ook niets mee dat critici stellen dat de auto volledig is gevormd naar zijn wensen. Ook hier kan Verstappen niets mee: "Ik heb de auto afgesteld zoals ik hem wil hebben. De andere coureur stelt de auto dan weer af op de manier zoals hij dat wil. Onze mensen ontwikkelen de auto om deze sneller te maken, niet om hem naar mijn wens aan te passen. Ik pas mijn rijstijl aan, aan de behoeften van de auto. Dan kan ik het maximale eruit halen. Dat is de kracht van een Formule 1-coureur."

Max heeft een geheime traction control en eigenlijk is het gewoon een Benetton uit 1994,want toen reed Schumacher ook met illegale wagen en wilde het team eigenlijk maar met 1 wagen punten scoren.....

Max heeft een geheime traction control en eigenlijk is het gewoon een Benetton uit 1994,want toen reed Schumacher ook met illegale wagen en wilde het team eigenlijk maar met 1 wagen punten scoren.....

"It’s a learning process. You critique what you have, look at how you can improve it and that’s been the evolutionary aspect of this year’s car.

"You can look at it two ways. If you qualify on pole and disappear DRS isn’t that important. But you have in qualifying so it’s useful there and in the race if you’re not at the front it’s also very important.”

The only weakness of the car, if it can be called that, is it was occasionally compromised by not being able to generate front tyre temperatures quickly enough to be ready for Turn 1 of a qualifying lap. Verstappen was ‘only’ on pole 13 times, but won 19 grands prix…

“Yes, that’s just the way we’ve developed the car. We’ve tried to prioritise race performance more than qualifying," Newey says.

"We made that decision back in ’21 when we were designing the car, to try to prioritise the race performance over one-lap performance.

"It was a deliberate choice and we felt that if the overtaking was going to become easier then that presumably meant qualifying performance would be slightly lower priority than in the past and it seems to have worked out.”

Given the blockbusting success of the Red Bulls in the first two years of these regulations, it’s not surprising that Newey quite likes them.

“To be totally honest when I first saw these regs in 2020 I was thinking this looks way too restrictive and quite dull. A lot of teams thought the same.

"We managed to apply some pressure to get a bit of a relaxation on them. Then once you get into them you realise there’s more flexibility in them when you first look at all the prescriptive boxes, gradients, rate changes etc.

RB 19 evenzovele overwegingen, RB 20 gaat het overtreffen. Het wordt wederom een mooie jaar. Leuk voor wiki, jammer voor Toto dat hij niet kijkt.

Zo oud als de straat - kan je als piloot alleen maar van genieten.
Als F1 fan is dat een andere zaak.

Zie dit jaar wel een aantal innovaties naar boven komen die RB al in gebruik had en we eerder geen zicht op hadden. Mooi en dikke proficiat voor de mensen die dit hebben uitgevonden en ontworpen.
