Sauber over Audi-project: "Talentvolle mensen aantrekken prioriteit"

Technisch directeur van Sauber James Key verwacht dat Audi pas vanaf 2027 in de Formule 1 op volle sterkte draait. Tot die tijd werkt het team toe naar dat moment en hoopt om nog meer talent binnen te halen om het ambitieuze project te doen slagen.

"Wat de volgende stappen betreft, is er een zeer belangrijk, goed gedocumenteerd plan", zei Key tegen Autosport. "We zijn er al mee bezig. En het aantrekken van al het juiste talent voor het team om zich aan te sluiten bij een aantal zeer goede talenten die er al zijn, is uiteraard een prioriteit waar we op de achtergrond hard aan werken."

Dat het meer tijd kost heeft te maken dat nieuw belangrijk personeel niet meteen aan de slag kan bij een nieuwe werkgever, het zogeheten garden leave. Zo kunnen werknemers niet meteen bedrijfsgevoelige informatie meenemen naar het nieuwe team. "Er zit natuurlijk een aanlooptijd voor mensen, met een verplichte time-out. Wij zijn ons daar dus van bewust. Daar zitten we zeker niet op te wachten, er zijn veel dingen die we nu kunnen doen zonder extra mensen enzovoort."

Dat het volgens Key meer tijd kost, is op zich geen ramp. "Uiteindelijk moeten we, om onze doelen te bereiken, uitbreiden op alle belangrijke gebieden, en eigenlijk op alle gebieden. Overal moet een stap omhoog worden gezet, ongeacht waar we ons in dat proces bevinden. Dus dat is de ambitie voor de korte termijn, precies wat we nu doen, waarbij we nauw samenwerken met Andreas Seidl op dat gebied voor '24, maar ook voor de toekomst. En dan zien we wel hoe het gaat."

Sauber is officieel Audi in 2026, maar de renstal heeft volgens de technisch directeur niet meteen het volle potentieel benut. "Ik denk dat we uiteindelijk waarschijnlijk pas rond '27 het eindproduct zullen zien waar we naar streven, omdat er nog veel te doen is. Maar we zullen in een veel betere vorm zijn als we '26 naderen. En dat geeft ons de kans om de stap voorwaarts te zetten die we nodig hebben."
