Red Bull wilde Ricciardo eerst niet naar AlphaTauri sturen

Daniel Ricciardo keerde halverwege 2023 terug in de Formule 1. De Australiër stapte in bij het team van AlphaTauri als de vervanger van de ontslagen Nyck de Vries. De comeback van Ricciardo was een redelijke verrassing, maar Red Bull wilde men eerst eigenlijk niet laten gaan.

Ricciardo begon het jaar als de derde coureur van het team van Red Bull Racing. De Australiër zou zich vooral richten op promotieactiviteiten en demonruns. De resultaten van De Vries vielen echter flink tegen waardoor de naam van Ricciardo weer werd genoemd bij AlphaTauri. Na een Red Bull-test op Silverstone kreeg Ricciardo het zitje. Hij kreeg tevens een nieuw contract waardoor hij ook dit jaar op de grid staat.

AlphaTauri CEO Peter Bayer stelt echter dat Red Bull er eerst geen zin in had om Ricciardo uit te lenen aan het zusterteam. Bayer legt de situatie uit en hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsport-Magazin: "In eerste instantie zeiden ze dat Daniel een Red Bull-reserve was en dat het zo zou blijven. We bleven een hele maand vragen hoe het ervoor stond. Op een gegeven moment kwam Christian Horner naar ons toe en zei hij dat ze een test gingen doen op Silverstone en dat we ernaar gingen kijken. Helmut Marko vroeg zich toen af waarom we het niet zouden doen."

    Goh, dat werpt een ander licht op de zaak. In eerste instantie leek men zo enthousiast over Nyck en was Marko de boeman die Nyck de laan uit stuurde. Nu blijkt dat men bij AT al maanden aan het vragen waren of ze Daniel niet konden krijgen ter vervanging van Nyck. Beetje trap-na gevoel…

      Ben ik het niet helemaal mee eens aangezien AT toch het team was die het aandurfde met de Vries. Hij heeft die kans gekregen maar toch duidelijk niet gepakt. Persoonlijk vond ik het sowiezo al vreemd dat een zusterteam van RBR in zee ging met een coureur die al op leeftijd was en eigenlijk niet heel veel heeft laten zien, ja hij is F2 kampioen geworden maar wel toen alle toppers al in de F1 reden, de FE gewonnen, al sla ik dat niet bijster hoog aan en de race van 2022 deed ie het natuurlijk fantastisch maar men vergeet dat dat ook wel een prima baantje was waar je nauwelijks kon inhalen, ook kreeg hij op het juiste moment een slipstream van Max terwijl die ronde na ronde aan het verdedigen was. Nyck is een zeer goede coureur alleen niet goed genoeg voor de F1 maar hoeft zich natuurlijk nergens voor te schamen met maar 20 zitjes in de absolute koningsklasse. Nu kan die zich weer gaan richten op misschien dan wel lagere aangeslagen raceklasses maar hij verdient er vast een goede boterham mee en hij kan weer het plezier terug vinden. Toch één van de weinige mensen die kan roepen dat ie F1 races heeft gereden...
