Haas-eigenaar weigert te denken aan verkoop

Eerder deze week maakte het team van Haas bekend dat ze het contract van teambaas Günther Steiner niet hebben verlengd. Steiner wordt vervangen door Ayao Komatsu, die al vele jaren werkzaam is bij het team van Haas. Teameigenaar Gene Haas benadrukt dat hij niet van plan is om het team te verkopen.

Steiner was betrokken bij het opzetten van het team en hij was bijna tien jaar lang de teambaas van Haas. Het was voor veel mensen dan ook een verrassing toen bekend werd dat hij geen nieuw contract zou krijgen. Het zorgde direct voor veel verwarring, want een aantal fans vroegen zich af wat er nu gaat gebeuren met de renstal. Er gingen direct geruchten rond over een mogelijke verkoop, maar daar bleek niets van te kloppen.

Verkoop?

Teameigenaar Gene Haas kan zich dan ook niet vinden in deze beweringen. De Amerikaan moet er niet aandenken om zijn team te verkopen. In gesprek met de media-afdeling van de Formule 1 is hij duidelijk: "Ik ben de Formule 1 niet ingestapt om het team te verkopen. Ik heb het gedaan omdat ik wilde racen, Günther dacht er precies hetzelfde over. We zijn hier niet om te cashen, we willen racen en competitief zijn. Als naar alle teams kijkt, dan hebben ze veel goede jaren en ook veel slechte jaren."

Overleven

De Amerikaanse eigenaar is ook van mening dat zijn team al de grootste tegenslag heeft overwonnen. De renstal is namelijk niet failliet gegaan in de afgelopen jaren. Volgens Gene Haas is dit een goed teken: "Overleven is één van de karakteristieken van beter worden. Zolang je het hoofd boven water kan houden, heb je altijd nog een extra jaar om te bewijzen dat je het waard bent. Dit is een grote uitdaging. Zonder Günther hebben we als team de kans om ons te focussen op andere aspecten. We hopen dat we er beter uit gaan komen."

Kennelijk een verschil van inzicht tussen Gene Haas en Steiner over de toekomst van Haas. En dan beslist de eigenaar uiteindelijk en kost het Steiner dus de kop.
Op zich is dat niet zo schokkend.

  Op zich is dat niet zo schokkend.
  
  Maar het staat er wel vreemd en voelt weer als een trap na richting Steiner. Hij had dezelfde boodschap ook kunnen brengen zonder Steiner in diskrediet te brengen of zelfs maar te noemen.

  Het is inderdaad een groot verschil in inzicht. Steiner vraagt om meer apparatuur waarmee hij meer performance in de auto kan brengen, wordt gewipt en de performance engineer neemt zijn stoeltje over.

Meer investeren in zaken die buiten de budgetcap vallen lijkt me de sleutel tot succes... Betere randvoorwaarden en die paar topsalarissen die je buiten de cap mag uitgeven (voor je eigen Newey, Wache, Allison of wie dan ook) voor de juiste mensen gebruiken. Qua rijders hebben ze geen toppers, maar momenteel wel 2 degelijke coureurs. De jaren met Schumacher en Mazepin waren natuurlijk geen topjaren qua feedback voor ontwikkeling en leverde vooral extra kosten op door de vele crashes.

  Inderdaad. Qua organisatie, infrastructuur en financiën kan er een hoop worden verbeterd, zo lijkt het. En die crashes van Schumacher en Mazepin deden echt pijn, vooral omdat ze toen nog onder de budgetcap zaten en al hun budget dus al nodig hadden om überhaupt het team draaiende te houden. Zonder die crashes hadden ze iets meer budget gehad voor de ontwikkeling van de auto.
  
  Als je zo'n klein team bent moet je heel slim omgaan met je budget en dan kan het wel eens gunstiger zijn om degelijke coureurs te hebben die je zelf betaalt en die resultaten halen dan om onervaren en crashende, maar betalende coureurs te hebben die ook nog niet presteren.
