Horner baalt van interne duels: "Frustrerend"

Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez vormen het ideale rijdersduo bij het team van Red Bull Racing. De hiërarchie is duidelijk en er is weinig onderlinge ergernis. Eén keer gebeurde dat wel dat had grote gevolgen, teambaas Christian Horner geeft toe dat dit een frustrerende zaak was.

Verstappen is vrijwel altijd de snelste Red Bull Racing-coureur. De Nederlander werd in de afgelopen drie jaar wereldkampioen en hij kreeg soms hulp van zijn teamgenoot Perez. In 2022 weigerde hij echter Perez erlangs te laten in Brazilië, mede hierdoor liep de Mexicaan de tweede plaats in het wereldkampioenschap mis. De twee coureurs spraken het incident snel uit, maar in Mexico was men woest. Verstappen meldde zich in 2023 dan ook met extra beveiligers in de Mexicaanse paddock.

Frustrerend

Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner legt uit hoe hij met de bijzondere situatie in Brazilië omging. Het was niet makkelijk en Horner is eerlijk in de podcast 'Secrets of Success': "Zoiets is altijd frustrerend als het publiekelijk wordt uitgespeeld. Het werd na het evenement direct achter gesloten deuren met de twee coureurs besproken. Ik denk dat het bij elke controverse belangrijk is om het op tafel te leggen om goed te begrijpen wat er op dat moment door je hoofd ging en om het vanuit het oogpunt van het team uit te leggen."

Eerlijkheid

Horner is van mening dat het belangrijk is als er met eerlijkheid en een open vizier wordt gewerkt. De Britse teambaas vervolgt zijn verhaal: "Ik denk dat negentig procent van de dingen kan worden verholpen als ze eerlijk worden aangepakt en uiteraard in het juiste kader, dat is niet altijd voor de ogen van het publiek. Dat was belangrijk in deze situatie, dat de coureurs spraken met elkaar en dat ik met hen sprak."

Als ik mij goed herinner had het voor de eindstand voor Perez niet uitgemaakt en was hij sowieso 3e geworden achter Ver en Lec. met 1 punt verschil als Verstappen hem voor had gelaten.

"Ik denk dat negentig procent van de dingen kan worden verholpen als ze eerlijk worden aangepakt en uiteraard in het juiste kader" Volgens mij had Max nog voor Brazilië (waarschijnlijk meteen na Monaco) duidelijk aangegeven wat hij wel en niet voor Checo zou doen. RB heeft hem tijdens die race publiekelijk voor het blok gezet. Een andere coureur was wel gezwicht maar Max dus niet.

  Eens. Ik denk dat Max dit al eerder luid en duidelijk heeft gecommuniceerd, maar dat ze bij RBR wellicht dachten dat het uiteindelijk wel zou meevallen, dat Max later wel zijn keutel zou intrekken, maar ze hebben daar op een pijnlijke wijze moeten ervaren dat Max echt meende wat hij zei en niet zou wijken.
