Verstappen buigt voor andere sporters: "Kan ik niet opbrengen"

Max Verstappen is momenteel de grote superster van de Formule 1. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur geniet van zijn successen, maar hij wil zich soms ook focussen op andere zaken. Hij heeft veel respect voor andere sporters, hij geeft eerlijk toe dat hij bepaalde dingen niet zou kunnen opbrengen.

Verstappen leeft voor zijn sport. Hij verschijnt elk weekend topfit aan de start en de Nederlander verbrak vorig jaar record na record. Ook buiten de raceweekenden om is Verstappen bezig met de racerij, tijdens de winterbreak voerde hij bijvoorbeeld een test uit met een GT3-bolide en hij kruipt ook regelmatig achter het stuur van zijn simulator. Maar het is voor Verstappen wel belangrijk dat hij een team op zich heen heeft.

De Red Bull-coureur heeft dan ook veel respect voor andere sporters. Verstappen wijst in een interview met Formule 1 Magazine naar bijvoorbeeld wielrenners: "Dat is een heel extreme sport, vooral hoe je daarvoor moet leven. Dat zou ik in ieder geval niet kunnen. Het is veel eenzamer dan de Formule 1. Ik zie die wielrenners veel in Monaco, allemaal met een trainingsplan. Dan gaan ze vijf of zes uur per dag fietsen. Ik zou dat niet kunnen opbrengen. Als ik bijvoorbeeld ga hardlopen, doe ik dat met mijn trainer. Ik heb echt iemand nodig om te trainen."

      "Ik vroeg Max: ‘je bent 17 en alle fotografen volgen je. Dit staat je de rest van je leven in de F1 te wachten. Hoe is dat?’ Hij keek me recht in de ogen en zei: ‘dat gebeurt alleen als ik goed genoeg ben’."

      Nu is duidelijk waarom die fotografen niet achter mij aan lopen. Niet goed genoeg!

      Interessant dat Watson lijkt te impliceren dat Jos bij Benetton inderdaad minder materiaal had dan Schumacher. En dat dit de reden is dat hij bij Max erin gestampt heeft dat hij zijn teamgenoot moet 'vernietigen'.

    Ik heb precies hetzelfde: ik heb een trainer en een trainingsmaatje nodig die me bij de les houdt, qua oefeningen, qua voeding - anders dwaal ik af.

    Dat is gewoon zelfdiscipline. Een trainingsplan helpt daar ook aan bij, omdat je jezelf dwingt om trainingen te doen. Hardlopen doe ik het liefst alleen, aangezien je bij een "goede" run, helemaal geen tijd/energie hebt om ook nog te praten. Daarnaast heeft iedereen vaak z'n eigen programma.
