De Vries kijkt vooruit: "Ben nog steeds dezelfde persoon"

Nyck de Vries kende vorig jaar een rampzalig debuutseizoen in de Formule 1. De Nederlander werd na een halfjaar aan de kant geschoven door AlphaTauri en dat deed pijn. De Vries baalde als een stekker, maar hij geeft aan dat hij nog steeds dezelfde persoon is.

De Vries maakte in 2022 indruk toen hij eenmalig mocht invallen bij het team van Williams. AlphaTauri sloeg toe en ze gaven hem een contract voor 2023. De Vries zakte echter genadeloos hard door het ijs en hij scoorde geen WK-punten en hij werd verslagen door zijn teamgenoot Yuki Tsunoda. AlphaTauri schoof hem aan de kant en De Vries kondigde een mediastilte aan. Die stilte is nu voorbij en hij rijdt dit jaar voor Toyota in het WEC en hij heeft ook een zitje in de Formule E.

De Vries voelt zich op dit moment weer goed. Hij leeft toe naar zijn nieuwe avonturen in de autosport en in gesprek met Formule 1 Magazine kijkt hij terug op zijn teleurstellende Formule 1-jaar: "Ik denk dat ik nog steeds dezelfde persoon ben. Het is ook niet dat ik na het vertrek uit de Formule 1 een lange break nam van de autosport. Alleen deed ik dat wel qua media. Ondertussen ben ik altijd bezig geweest met de sport. Natuurlijk heb ik even wat vakantie genomen, het was zomer, maar het ging hier uiteindelijk ook maar om een weekje of twee. Af en toe had ik een vrij weekend. Maar ik heb niet stilgezeten, ik ben vrij snel aan de slag gegaan met de toekomst."

Voorlopige kent ie ook een rampzalige hervatting van zijn FE-avontuur bij een team dat vorig jaar zo ongeveer de hekkensluiter was.
Het is te hopen dat zijn WEC-seizoen beter van start gaat.
Ik vind overigens wel dat ie in F1 te weinig kans heeft gehad. Iedere debutant hoort een seizoen of twee de kans te krijgen, tenzij ie het heel bont maakt. Tot die laatste categorie behoorde De Vries zeker niet. Zijn mislukken had ook zeker te maken met de aanhoudend slechte prestaties van de auto en de onrealistische verwachtingen die AT hem als buitenstaander oplegde.

  Er was niet veel te verwachten van Mahindra dit jaar schijnt. Volgend jaar zouden ze de vruchten moeten plukken van het werk dat ze dit jaar doen.
