Grote tegenstander steunt Steiner: "Hij is een merk"

Het team van Haas nam eerder deze maand afscheid van teambaas Günther Steiner. Teameigenaar Gene Haas besloot het contract van Steiner niet te verlengen en verving hem door Ayao Komatsu. Ralf Schumacher vindt het zonde dat Steiner is vertrokken bij het team van Haas.

Steiner was bijna tien jaar lang de teambaas van het team van Haas. De Italiaan was betrokken bij het opzetten van het team en hij was zeer populair bij de fans. Hij was uitgegroeid tot een van de kleurrijkste personen uit de paddock. Steiner speelde een grote rol in de Netflix-serie 'Drive to Survive' en daardoor werd hij een wereldwijde beroemdheid. Op de baan vielen de resultaten tegen en Gene Haas koos dan ook voor een frisse wind.

Steiner krijgt nu steun uit een opvallende hoek. Oud-coureur Ralf Schumacher vindt het namelijk jammer dat Steiner is vertrokken. Schumacher had in het verleden regelmatig mot met Steiner omdat de teambaas zeer kritisch was op Mick Schumacher. In gesprek met Formel1.de spreekt Ralf zich nu uit: "Hij was echt een soort merk. Het is heel erg jammer dat er nu weer een kleurrijk persoon uit onze sport is vertrokken. Misschien is het inderdaad tijd voor een nieuw gezicht om die positie in te vullen. De tijd zal het ons gaan leren."

      Ik snap Gene wel. Günter was populairder en bekender dan zijn team en coureurs bij elkaar. Leuk voor Günter zijn ego, maar funest als je een merk wil bouwen. Gene wil dat het weer over Haas gaat en niet over Günter.

      Ja en nee, wat mij betreft. Ja; hij trok wel heel veel aandacht naar zich toe en dan was het inderdaad veel meer een Steiner-show.
      Nee; het gaat/ging nu niet bepaald goed de laatste tijd met Haas en als hekkensluiter krijg je dan nu eenmaal geen of veel minder (media) aandacht. Met Steiner viel er in ieder geval nog een beetje exposure voor Haas te bespeuren ook was dit niet altijd positief. In de wereld van de exposure is soms minder positieve bekendheid beter dan helemaal geen bekendheid heb ik wel eens vernomen.

    Zelf betwijfel ik ook of die nieuwe teambaas wél wat voor elkaar gaat krijgen. Die begon al weer lekker met "het wordt lastig begin volgend jaar" en bla bla.
    Niet dat ik Steiner als een hele goede teambaas zie (bij Jaguar viel hij in zijn rol ook tegen). Maar Steiner is volgens mij helemaal het probleem niet op dit moment.

      Zoals het klinkt lijkt Gene Haas simpelweg zijn interesse in de Formule 1 verloren te hebben. Wat dat betreft zeg ik z.s.m. verkopen aan Andretti.
