Voormalig trainer is Verstappen enorm dankbaar voor openheid

Max Verstappen nam eind vorig jaar afscheid van zijn personal trainer Bradley Scanes. De twee werkten jarenlang succesvol samen, maar ze hebben nu besloten om allebei een eigen weg te gaan. Scanes is Verstappen nog altijd dankbaar en hij stelt dat hij zich altijd thuis heeft gevoeld in de sport.

Scanes beleefde de successen van Verstappen van dichtbij. Hij fungeerde als de personal trainer van de Red Bull Racing-coureur en hij stond dus elk weekend in de pitbox. Toch besloot hij afscheid te nemen van Verstappen om zich te focussen op andere zaken. Verstappen vond al snel een nieuwe trainer in de persoon van Rupert Manwaring, de voormalige trainer van Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz.

Geen fan

Scanes kijkt uitgebreid terug op de samenwerking met Verstappen. De personal trainer kijkt uitgebreid terug op deze samenwerking in de Red Flag-podcast. Daar geeft Scanes eerlijk toe dat hij geen idee had met wie hij ging samenwerken: "Ik moet toegeven dat ik helemaal geen groot fan was van de autosport. Ik wist niet eens wie Max Verstappen was. De eerste Formule 1-race die ik zag, bekeek ik vanuit de pitbox van Red Bull."

Dankbaar

Scanes maakte pas echt kennis met Verstappen en zijn entourage tijdens een testdag met GT's op het circuit van Barcelona. Daar voelde de trainer zich direct enorm op zijn plaats. Hij voelde zich onderdeel van de familie: "Max zit natuurlijk het grootste gedeelte van de tijd in de auto, maar ik kan het goed vinden met iedereen die dicht bij hem staat. Ik paste er goed tussen en dat was ook zo tijdens de jaren waarin ik met Max werkte. Daar ben ik Max, zijn vader en de rest van de familie heel erg dankbaar voor."
