Voormalig trainer onthult: "Max vindt work-outs niet leuk"

Max Verstappen werd vorig jaar met speels gemak wereldkampioen in de Formule 1. De Nederlander kende een zeer sterk seizoen waarin alles vanzelf leek te gaan. Hij moest er echter wel hard voor werken, want zijn trainer Bradley Scanes liet hem zweten. Scanes deelt dat Verstappen helemaal geen fan is van de work-outs.

Verstappen werkte in de afgelopen jaren samen met zijn personal trainer Bradley Scanes. De samenwerking verliep goed, maar Scanes nam eind vorig jaar het besluit om zich meer te focussen op andere zaken. Hij nam afscheid van Verstappen, maar dat betekent niet dat ze elkaar nu nooit meer gaan spreken. Verstappen heeft overigens al wel een nieuwe trainer gevonden in de persoon van Rupert Manwaring, de oud-trainer van Carlos Sainz.

Werk

Scanes kijkt op zijn beurt terug op de jaren met Verstappen. De trainer is te gast in de Red Flag Podcast en daar deelt hij hoe hij Verstappen trainde. Lachend laat Scanes weten dat Verstappen liever andere dingen deed: "Je hebt bepaalde punten die je wil bereiken, het maakt niet uit hoe je daar komt. Wij probeerden dat zo efficiënt mogelijk te doen qua tijd, we zochten ook naar een manier die voor Max aangenaam was. Dat was een belangrijk doel. Hij vindt work-outs helemaal niet leuk, dat weet iedereen. Voor hem was dat gewoon werk."

Planken

Scanes wist dat Verstappen geen fan was van de trainingen, maar hij hoorde de drievoudig wereldkampioen nooit klagen. Sterker nog, hij blonk uit in een aantal oefeningen: "Hij doet het misschien niet graag, maar hij had niet veel aanmoediging nodig. Het was fijn om met hem te werken. Het vervelendste vond hij de single leg squats en het planken. Hij kan eigenlijk best wel lang planken, in het voorseizoen hebben we het dan over vier tot vijf minuten. Tijdens de zomerstop duurde dat iets langer."

Heel vreemd dat Scanes dit soort persoonlijke informatie tentoonspreidt? Rancune? Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat die Personal Trainers geen geheimhoudingsplicht hebben.
