Perez trots op dapper Red Bull

Het team van Red Bull Racing trok vorige week het doek van hun nieuwe RB20. De wagen zag er anders uit dan men had verwacht en dat zorgde voor veel verbazing. Ook Sergio Perez geeft toe dat hij een beetje verbaasd was, maar daar is hij wel heel blij mee.

Red Bull riep in de wintermaanden dat de RB20 vooral een evolutie zou zijn van de RB19 van het afgelopen seizoen. Toen men de auto onthulde in Milton Keynes, zag de wereld echter iets anders. De auto vertoonde veel visuele verschillen met de voorgaande bolide en het is de verwachting dat er nog veel nieuwe onderdelen zullen worden geïntroduceerd. Volgens de geruchten werkt het team namelijk aan een soort zeropod-design.

Verbazing

Red Bull-coureur Sergio Perez is heel erg blij met zijn nieuwe wagen. De Mexicaan ziet dat zijn team stappen heeft gezet, maar ook hij had dit niet helemaal zien aankomen. In gesprek met Motorsport.com is Perez goudeerlijk: "Ja, ik was ook wel een beetje verbaasd. Tegelijkertijd laat het zien dat het team grenzen blijft verleggen en dat we door blijven gaan. Dat is echt mooi om te zien."

Dapper

In 2023 was Red Bull zeer dominant in de Formule 1. Het was dan ook geen gekke gedachte om te verwachten dat ze deze lijn zouden blijven volgen. Volgens Perez geeft Red Bull hiermee een signaal af: "Het laat zien hoe hongerig we nog zijn. We hadden vorig jaar zo'n dominantie auto, dat je je niet kon voorstellen dat we het concept enorm zouden aanpassen. Dit is een heel erg dappere keuze van Red Bull."

  Ik kop 'm vast in, Perez gaat als een speer en halverwege het seizoen heeft hij meer punten dan Max (hoop ik voor de Zuid-Amerikaanse Checo fans).

Als Perez het dit jaar goed doet en dicht bij Max blijft in het kampioenschap kan het zomaar een interessante coureur voor Mercedes zijn voor 2025
Perez neemt een hoop kennis van RedBull mee, als hij (en Toto het lang stilhouden) en de overstap pas laat in het seizoen bekend maken.

  Wanneer Checo zichzelf realistische doelen stelt en accepteert dat Max gewoonweg sneller en beter is (en Checo normaliter dus geen wk kan worden) dan kan hij een prima en succesvol seizoen hebben en dan dus ook geen/weinig last meer hebben van een mentale terugval. Dan is het een win/win voor hem en RBR en dan kan hij wellicht ook na dit jaar nog gewoon door daar.

De drievoudig wereldkampioen van RB, die in 2016 al een volwassen en faire racer was, reageerde minder verbaasd, immers ook de RB20 is om hem heen gebouwd…

Je moet het ze nageven, het is best wel een verandering tov de RB18 en RB19.

Aan de andere kant wordt teveel aandacht besteed aan de sidepods. Beetje logisch want de onderkant van de wagen met venturikanalen zijn onzichtbaar.

Newey had met de RB18 de ophanging getekend en heeft daarna met de RB19 het concept volledig geoptimaliseerd. Met de RB20 heeft hij de airo bovenaan aangepakt wat natuurlijk ook gevolgen heeft onderaan de motorkap. Geen klein werk waar we straks het resultaat van zullen zien.

Een verdere evolutie op de RB19 had kunnen stagneren - met deze stap kunnen ze verder evolueren en dat is best dapper maar mogelijk ook noodzakelijk om hun positie te vrijwaren.
