Coureurs als Sebastian Vettel en Fernando Alonso zie je zelden fouten maken. Vandaag was het echter zo ver. Vettel en Alonso gingen op precies dezelfde plaats, de eerste bocht va het Yas Marina Circuit, in de fout en beiden kwamen terecht in de bandenstapels. Bij Alonso brak zijn achterwielophanging af.

Crash van Sebastian Vettel

Vettel vertelde na afloop van de training in Abu Dhabi: "Ik verloor de auto bij het insturen van de bocht. Ik kwam iets te wijd, pakte teveel kerbstones mee en verloor de achterkant van de auto. We hadden niet al te veel schade aan de auto, want tegen het einde van de training kon ik nog wat ronden rijden. Ik was gewoon wat te gretig. Ik ging iets over de rand, daar is het stoffig en dus ook minder grip."

Crash van Fernando Alonso

"De crash had geen al te groot effect op ons programma", vertelde Alonso. "Ik verloor zo'n twintig minuten in de training, maar gelukkig heeft Felipe het hele programma kunnen afwerken. We hebben vooral veel data verzameld over de bandenslijtage met veel brandstof aan boord."
