Ricciardo met de borst vooruit terwijl Caterham in de nek hijgt

Scuderia Toro Rosso-coureur Daniel Ricciardo is ervan overtuigd dat zijn team en hij niet verder wegzakken in de pikorde. De Italiaanse renstal moest in de kwalificatie in Valencia zijn meerdere erkennen in Caterham. De Maleisische equipe heeft de jacht op Toro Rosso ingezet en introduceert in Silverstone een upgrade om de achterhoede definitief te verlaten.

Ricciardo maakt zich geen zorgen. Aan ESPN F1 vertelde hij: "Nee, ik ben helemaal niet bevreesd. Hoewel Caterham wat updates heeft voor komend weekend en daar zijn ze vrij optimistisch over. Maar qua pure snelheid hebben we nog een vrij grote voorsprong. Alleen in de kwalificaties moeten we meer uit de wagen persen. Dat is aan ons coureurs en een beetje aan de banden beter begrijpen. Maar ons racetempo is nog flink beter dan dat van Caterham. Zolang we in de kwalificaties niet top zijn krijgen ze meer kansen om voor ons te starten, maar in de race gaan we ze dan toch voorbij."

Op persoonlijk vlak gaat het wel goed met kwalificeren. Ricciardo: "Ik sta 7-1 voor in het duel met Jean-Eric Vergne en dat is leuk. Op papier is het goed. Je kijkt als eerste naar je teamgenoot, maar zeventiende en achttiende posities geven hoe dan ook weinig voldoening. Er is sprake van gezonde rivaliteit tussen Jean-Eric en mij. Hij heeft wat sterke races gereden en de afgelopen tijd gaan mijn wedstrijden wat beter. Ik heb wat gevonden en dat is veelbelovend."
