Williams geeft Bottas de tijd om te wennen aan de Formule 1

Valtteri Bottas krijgt van Williams minstens een half seizoen op om tempo te komen in de Formule 1. De Fin debuteert komend seizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De GP3-kampioen van 2011 staat te popelen om eindelijk te racen in de Formule 1.

Bottas vertelde aan MTV3: "Mentaal is een jaar als het vorige heel zwaar. Aan het einde van de training kwam ik net in mijn ritme en vervolgens moest ik de auto weer afstaan. Ik weet zeker dat ik mezelf verder had kunnen verbeteren, als ik maar meer had kunnen rijden."

"En als ik dan de race van de zijlijn volgde, dan vroeg ik mezelf uiteraard af waar ik zelf toe in staat zou zijn geweest. Het was niet makkelijk. Helemaal de weekenden waarin ik totaal niet in actie kwam waren erg lang en kropen voorbij."

Williams probeert de rust rondom de Fin te bewaren. Directeur Toto Wolff laat in Motorsport Aktuell weten: "Valtteri heeft kilometers en ervaring nodig. Hij is zeer snel en een intelligent figuur. Het is aan ons om hem het materiaal te geven om zijn potentieel te realiseren."

"Het zou onredelijk zijn om aan te nemen dat hij in Melbourne zichzelf al op de tweede startrij nestelt, zelfs als de auto werkelijk zo goed is. Ik denk dat hij vanaf het midden van het seizoen de volledige potentie van de wagen kan benaderen."

Verstandig, maar ik denk eerlijk gezegd dat hij dat helemaal niet nodig zal hebben. Zie hem direct de eerste races al mooie punten scoren.
