Mercedes volgens Wolff iets beter met banden dan in 2012

De Mercedes W04 springt beter met de banden om dan zijn voorganger. Dat oordeel velt motorsportdirecteur Toto Wolff tegenover Autosport. In Australië was Mercedes in de kwalificatie sterker dan in de race, maar toch ontziet de nieuwe bolide het rubber meer dan de W03.

Wolff: "Voor Mercedes is dat aspect iets beter dan in 2012. Maar het lijkt te lonen om meer voor zondag te werken dan voor zaterdag. De winnaar in Melbourne startte van P7 terwijl de man op pole position worstelde en als derde eindigde. Misschien is het een optie om voor de kwalificatie een compromis te sluiten zodat we in de race beter uit de verf komen."

"Sommige teams lijken het spoor bijster. McLaren, Williams en Toro Rosso sparen de banden amper. Een van de Force India presteerde voor 80 procent van de race perfect en viel op de zachte compound ver weg. Voor ons hield de zachte band in de eerste stint het goed vol en een twee-stopper leek haalbaar. Maar op de harde band gebeurde het tegenovergestelde, dat was interessant."

"Maleisië wordt wat de banden betreft nog meer complex, want we krijgen nu te maken met de hitte. Dat nemen we allemaal mee in onze overwegingen en we proberen zoveel mogelijk te begrijpen. Wie het meest snapt over de banden is op Sepang spekkoper."
