Pirelli ontkent belofte voor gewijzigde compounds vanaf Bahrein

Bandenleverancier Pirelli heeft beloofd om de banden te veranderen voor de Grand Prix van Bahrein, op zijn laatst voor de Grand Prix van Spanje. Dat laten Mercedes-motorsportdirecteur Toto Wolff en Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko weten. Wolff tegenover SID: "Wij hebben signalen voor gewijzigde compounds opgevangen, waarschijnlijk vanaf Bahrein of daarna."

Marko deelde aan Sky mede: "We moeten onze coureurs vertellen om onder de limiet van de auto te rijden, omdat het anders een te zware belasting voor de banden is. Natuurlijk hebben we al serieuze gesprekken met Pirelli gevoerd. Ze realiseren zich dat deze situatie niet goed is en ons is beloofd dat we uiterlijk vanaf Bahrein over andere compounds beschikken."

Pirelli weet officieel nergens van. Voor een aanpassing van de compounds is unanieme instemming van alle teams nodig. Motorsportbaas Paul Hembery: "Daar is zeker geen sprake van."
