McLaren verwerpt suggestie van verkapte teamorder

McLaren heeft Sergio Perez in de Spaanse Grand Prix niet op slinkse wijze de opdracht gegeven om teamgenoot Jenson Button niet aan te vallen. De twee vochten in Bahrein nog een verbeten duel uit en in Barcelona leek een nieuwe tweestrijd in de maak. Totdat de teamleiding ingreep en Perez sommeerde om op zijn banden te letten.

Dat was geen verkapte teamorder, legt teambaas Martin Whitmarsh uit. "Sergio gaf aan het einde zelf toe dat zijn banden naar de vaantjes waren. We wilden gewoon niet dat hij zijn banden op zou roken in een gevecht. Dat gebeurde bijna alsnog. Het was dus niet tactisch, maar praktisch. We hebben hem niet gevraagd om niet te knokken. We zagen de bandenslijtage en maakten ons zorgen, dus daar hebben we hem op gewezen."

Perez zelf deed via Twitter ook een duit in het zakje door te benadrukken dat het geen bevel was om Button met rust te laten. "De boodschap over de radio was puur bedoeld om de banden te sparen. Zeker geen teamorder. Ik kan niet wachten op Monaco."
