Alonso staakt onderhandelingen voor overname wielerploeg

Ferrari-coureur Fernando Alonso koopt toch niet de licentie van wielerploeg Euskaltel-Euskadi. Eind vorige maand bereikten beide partijen nog een principe-akkoord over de overdracht van de World Tour-licentie, maar de onderhandelingen hebben geen definitieve overeenkomst opgeleverd.

De Baskische wielerformatie kan zelf het hoofd niet meer boven water houden. Euskaltel stelt op haar website: "Voor ons is dit treurig nieuws na de hoop die we eind augustus genereerden met de gesprekken met Alonso. Een definitieve deal bleek echter niet haalbaar. Euskaltel is nu helaas verplicht om terug te keren naar het proces om het project te ontmantelen."

Alonso schrijft zelf op zijn Twitter-pagina: "We hebben het tot het einde geprobeerd, maar het was gewoon onmogelijk om een wielerploeg op de been te brengen voor 2014. Mijn passie voor die sport is nog intact, dus dit is slechts het begin van de toekomst. We gaan een team bouwen waar we trots op kunnen zijn, indien nodig vanuit het niets."
