De Vries traint naar de snelste tijd in Bakoe

Nyck de Vries won twee weken geleden de sprintrace in Monaco en dat momentum heeft hij kennelijk meegenomen naar Bakoe, want in de vrije training voor de Formule 2 in Azerbeidzjan noteerde hij de snelste tijd. De Rapax-coureur klokte een 1:54.187 als beste tijd.

Daar kon niemand aan tippen. Jordan King kwam nog het dichtst in de buurt met een 1:54.308. Luca Ghiotto completeerde de top drie met een 1:54.734. Kampioenschapleider Charles Leclerc kwam niet verder dan een 1:55.129 en moest genoegen nemen met de zevende plaats.

Dat is nog altijd beter dan concurrent Oliver Rowland. De Brit crashte ongeveer een kwartier voor het einde in bocht 1 en zakte naar de veertiende plaats. Sergey Sirotkin viel in bocht 19 stil met mechanische problemen. Nabil Jeffri kuste de muur in bocht 8 en reed maar vier rondjes.

Toch wel knap hoe hij zijn carrière weer in het goede vaarwater heeft weten te krijgen. Leek in januari nog op weg naar de GT's en rijdt nu gewoon nette uitslagen in F2. Had ik niet verwacht.
