Italianen Fuoco en Ghiotto winnen in eigen land

De Formule 2 heeft een atypisch weekend op het circuit van Monza achter de rug. Hoe vaak komt het voor de top drie uit het kampioenschap in totaal maar twee punten scoort tijdens een weekend? Charles Leclerc en Oliver Rowland keerden met lege handen huiswaarts, Artem Markelov sprokkelde nog twee puntjes in Italië

Wie deden het dan wel goed op Monza? Luca Ghiotto bijvoorbeeld. De Italiaan won twee keer in eigen land, en toch weer niet. Na zijn zege in de natte hoofdrace op zaterdag incasseerde hij een tijdstraf. De Italiaanse fans op de tribune hoefden niet te treuren, want de zege werd in de schoot van landgenoot Antonio Fuoco geworpen. Sergio Sette Camara heeft de smaak na zijn winst op Spa te pakken en zette MP Motorsport weer op het podium.

En hoe verging het Nyck de Vries in Italië? De kwalificatie was uitmuntend met een tweede plaats. De hoofdrace was een ander verhaal. Bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde zette hij de aanval in op leider Ghiotto. Die actie leek te slagen, maar bij het uitkomen van de eerste chicane raakten Leclerc en de Nederlander elkaar. De Vries liep een lekke band op en was dus kansloos voor een mooie klassering. Dat viel op zondag in de sprintrace niet meer te herstellen.
