Oliver Rowland wint hoofdrace, Nyck de Vries zesde

De laatste Formule 2-hoofdrace van het seizoen is een prooi geworden voor Oliver Rowland. De ontwikkelingscoureur van Renault startte als vierde en versloeg polesitter Artem Markelov in de strijd om de zege. Nyck de Vries wist zijn tweede startplaats niet om te zetten in een podiumplaats, de Nederlander finishte de race uiteindelijk als zesde. Achter Rowland en Markelov finishte Antonio Fuoco als derde, nadat teamgenoot Charles Leclerc hem in de laatste ronde voorbij liet.

Bij de start behield Markelov de leiding, maar Nyck de Vries begon al snel aan te dringen bij de Rus. Markelov reed op de superzachte band, terwijl De Vries onderweg was op de zachte band. De Vries wist uiteindelijk de leiding over te nemen, na een fraaie uitremactie op Markelov. In het vervolg van de race verloor het voormalige talent van McLaren terrein en De Vries zou de race uiteindelijk als zesde besluiten.

Charles Leclerc liet zien dat hij niet voor niets de nieuwe kampioen is in de Formule 2. De Monegask heeft de titel al binnen, maar liet zijn klasse zien op het Yas Marina Circuit. In het gevecht om de leiding dwong Leclerc De Vries in een foutje, maar de jonge Nederlander gaf niet zomaar op. Uiteindelijk moest De Vries capituleren en reed Leclerc binnen een paar rondjes tien seconden weg.

De Vries bleef lang tweede, maar moest uiteindelijk toezien hoe Markelov en Rowland hem ook nog passeerden. In de slotfase bestond de top drie uit Rowland, Markelov en Leclerc, maar Leclerc was aardig voor teamgenoot Fuoco en liet hem in de slotfase voorbij.

De sprintrace staat voor morgenvroeg 11:10 uur Nederlandse tijd op het programma.

Heb het niet gezien maar klinkt als wat als Nyck op zacht was gestart?

  Hij was op de zachte band gestart, uiteindelijk niet de juiste keuze. De super zachte band was na 5 ronden al op, waardoor hij nog twee plaatsen verloor op het einde.

Voor de Vries wordt het dus volgend jaar alles of niets. Wil hij nog toekomst hebben, dan moet hij wel kampioen worden in 2018.

Leclerc deed een "Barrichellootje" om teammate Fuoco te matsen, die op die manier Nyck de Vries kon inhalen in het kampioenschap.

  Winnaar Rowland wordt uit de uitslag geschrapt doordat zijn 'skid block' niet dik genoeg bleek. De verplichte bodemplaat onder de auto kwam na afloop van de hoofdrace in Abu Dhabi niet door de technische keuring. Rowland mag de sprintrace op het Yas Marina Circuit morgenvroeg nog wel aanvangen, maar zal vanwege zijn straf helemaal achteraan moeten beginnen.
  
  Fuoco kreeg op het asfalt de derde plek cadeau van kampioen en ploegmaat Leclerc, maar hij is deze enkele uren later eveneens kwijtgeraakt. De bandendruk van zijn voorbanden bleek lager dan dat het verplichte minimum voorschrijft. De Italiaan is net als Rowland uit de uitslag geschrapt en moet morgenvroeg - eveneens net als de Brit - vanaf de laatste startrij vertrekken voor de sprintrace."
