Norris: "Als ik F2-kampioen word met Carlin, ben ik beter dan Leclerc"

Lando Norris had een succesvol 2017. Hij werd kampioen in de Formule 3, werd tweede in de stratenrace van Macau en werd uitgeroepen tot Britse coureur van het jaar door Autosport.

Voor 2018 gaat Norris een stapje hogerop. Hij zal namens Carlin uitkomen in het Formule 2-kampioenschap en in januari zal hij het seizoen aftrappen met de 24 uur van Daytona. Het jonge talent kijkt ernaar uit. "Tijdens de test heb ik me al een beetje kunnen voorbereiden. Het is ook lastig om te zeggen hoe mijn snelheid is in vergelijking met mijn teamgenoten, omdat we niet met nieuwe banden of dezelfde hoeveelheid brandstof reden. Toch denk ik dat mijn snelheid best goed was voor een eerste dag, dus dat moet in Daytona ook wel lukken," zo vertelt hij in een interview op de website van McLaren.

De teamgenoten van Norris bij United Autosports zijn Filipe Albuquerque en Fernando Alonso. De Formule 3-kampioen verwacht vooral van de Spaanse Formule 1-coureur veel te kunnen leren. "Het is een goede kans om iets van Fernando te leren. Die kans wil ik niet verprutsen. Aan de andere kant wil ik in de trainingen en kwalificatie ook wel laten zien wat ik kan ten opzichte van hem. Daytona is een echte teamwedstrijd, maar ik verwacht wel dat er onderling ook een beetje gestreden gaat worden."

Voor het Formule 2-seizoen blijft Norris bij Carlin, het team waarmee hij de titel pakte in de Formule 3. Of er weer een kampioenschap in zit, weet hij nog niet. "Het is lastig te zeggen tot er geracet is. Ik heb wel vertrouwen in het team met het afstellen van de auto. We hebben beperkte ruimte om te testen en het zijn gloednieuwe wagens, wat ervoor zorgt dat het veld op gelijke voet begint. Het doel is om te winnen, maar dat wordt lastig genoeg."

De testcoureur van McLaren wordt wel eens vergeleken met huidige Formule 2-kampioen Charles Leclerc. Norris denkt daar het zijne van. "Ik heb als eens gezegd dat ik pas bewijs gelijkwaardig te zijn aan Leclerc als ik win. Als ik zou winnen met Carlin ben ik misschien wel beter, omdat het team niet precies weet waar het staat in de hiërarchie. Het zal lastig worden om net zoveel te winnen als de afgelopen jaren, maar Charles heeft bewezen dat het ook in de Formule 2 kan."

Kan die quote in de titel weg? Lando heeft dat niet letterlijk gezegd. Vind dit nogal aanmatigend neergezet zo.
Mijn indruk is ook helemaal niet dat Lando op deze manier arrogant zou zijn.

  What’s new? Dit soort uitspraken tussen de jongere coureurs zijn scheering en inslag. Occon zegt ook dat hij beter is dan Verstappen omdat hij hem verslagen heeft in het F3 kampioenschap. Zonder verdere overweging mbt toenmalige teams en auto’s. Hij krijgt er een kick van en de pers vindt het geweldig om het vuurtje op te stoken, en legt daarbij de jongelingen graag de worden in de mond. Vind jij dat ......etc. Tja, hoe moet je anders de winter doorkomen als autosport journalist? ;)

Carlin aan de titel helpen is sowieso al een uitdaging. Om het net zo dominant te doen als Leclerc is bijna niet te doen! Om dan een zitje af te pakken van Fernando Alonso of Stoffel Vandoorne is al helemaal niet te doen! Wat je ook doet Lando... in 2019 zit je gewoon niet in een McLaren...

Vergelijken moet je nooit doen heeft totaal geen zin, ook zeggen dat je beter was dan 1 rijder, straks in de F1 zal je het waar moeten maken, en als het niet uitkomt komen ze er altijd op terug. Dat geld ook voor Ocon, die krijgt nu ook een zwaarder seizoen, met de Renault's en Stoffel en Alonso waarschijnlijk voor hem. Dus dat kan dan betekenen meer de Q3 missen en dan kan het allemaal zo anders lopen.

Nieuwe wagens dus maar ook andere tegenstanders dan Leclerc had. Het laatste deels doordat er een nieuwe garde deelneemt en deels doordat de blijvende garde een jaar meer ervaring heeft.

Prestaties in verschillende jaargangen in opstapklassen zijn bijna niet serieus met elkaar te vergelijken.
