Norris: "Bandenmanagement in Formule 2 lastiger dan elders"

Lando Norris staat tweede in de Formule 2, maar is de zomerstop niet met een goed gevoel begonnen. Hij heeft het af en toe lastig en hij maakt her en der wat foutjes. Ook meent de Brit dat het letten op de banden in de Formule 2 lastiger is dan in elke andere klasse.

Norris werd in 2017 overtuigend kampioen in het Europees Formule 3 en men verwachtte dat hij dan ook makkelijk mee kon strijden om de titel. Strijden om de titel lukt wel, maar hij legt het voorlopig toch af tegen Mercedes-junior George Russell. Deels heeft Norris te maken gehad met de opstartproblemen van de nieuwe Formule 2-bolide, die een aantal kuren vertoonde, maar zelf is de McLaren-junior ook niet foutloos gebleven. Vooral het beheren van de banden is lastig voor hem gebleken, zo geeft hij toe bij ESPN.

"De problemen met de auto hebben mij niet geholpen, maar ik heb zelf ook wat fouten gemaakt. Kleine foutjes zijn in de Formule 2 een stuk kostbaarder dan in de Formule 3 en Formule Renault, vooral wat betreft de banden. Goed op de banden letten was in de Formule 3 en Formule 4 niet echt nodig, en maar heel zelden in de Formule Renault. In deze klassen maakte ik ongeveer evenveel kleine foutjes, maar nooit waren ze zo kostbaar. In de Formule 2 zit het veld namelijk dichter op elkaar. Dat maakt het een stuk lastiger. Dus als er iets gebeurt, dan maakt dat veel verschil."

"Op de Red Bull Ring had ik een aantal keer wat wielspin", geeft Norris als voorbeeld. "Dat zorgt voor wat slijtage aan het rubber en een hogere temperatuur in de band. Die zorgt ervoor dat je meer gaat glijden, waardoor de temperatuur verder stijgt en je nog meer gaat glijden. Het is een negatieve spiraal en dat zorgde ervoor dat ik buiten de punten viel. Ik heb niet veel grote fouten gemaakt, maar ik heb het niet zo goed gedaan als dat ik wilde."

Nog een extra jaartje F2 (winnen met overmacht?) of Superformula...

Want, wat "De problemen met de auto hebben mij niet geholpen" met je doet in F1, kan hij bij zijn concurrent en teamgenoot Vandoorne zien.

Hij begint nu al om zijn foutjes weg te praten want het ligt aan de banden en een foutje wordt harder afgestraft. Goede binnenkomst voor zijn sollicitatie naar F1.

  Bandenmanagement heeft veelal te maken met chassis en rijstijl.
  Het bepaald ook de mogelijke race strategie.

komt nog voor verassingen te staan met de prutbanden van Pirelli in F1.
Het mooie van F2 is dat fuel-saving bijna niet tot de orde is en ze daardoor de banden ook echt elke ronde er van langs kunnen geven.

F1 begint meer en meer op een soort pokerspelletje te worden qua banden.

  Bandendegradatie stelt in de F1 niets voor t.o.v. F2.
  Wanneer je in de F2 iets teveel van je banden vergt, dan loop je het aan het einde van de race lelijk op.
  Wat jij beweert klopt dus niet.
