Latifi wint chaotische sprintrace in Bakoe, De Vries net naast podium

De sprintrace van de Formule 2 in Azerbeidzjan is gewonnen door Nicholas Latifi. De DAMS-coureur reed na een chaotische race als eerste onder de geblokte vlag door. Juan Manuel Correa scoorde zijn eerste podiumplaats met P2, terwijl Nyck de Vries zich in de laatste ronde liet verrassen door Jack Aitken voor de derde positie.

Sean Gelael pakte direct na de start de leiding, maar lang bleven de coureurs niet op volle snelheid rijden. Tatiana Calderon veroorzaakte een crash in bocht 2 door een te optimistische inhaalactie te plaatsen. Ralph Boschung en Louis Deletraz waren daarvan de slachtoffers.

Gelael valt snel terug

Na de herstart was het echter snel voorbij met de pret voor Gelael. In de zesde ronde pakte Latifi de leiding over en in de ronden daarna werd de Indonesiër van Prema door meer en meer mannen ingehaald. De Vries begon intussen aan een kleine opmars, die hem op de vijfde positie bracht. In de fase daarna werd het racen van neutralisatie naar neutralisatie.

Dat begon in de tiende ronde met de crash van Giuliano Alesi. De Trident-coureur moest een inhaalactie op Guanyu Zhou bekopen met een botsing met de omheining. Latifi zag zijn voorsprong op de naaste achtervolgers, Correa en Aitken, daardoor weer slinken. In de dertiende ronde werd de race vervolgens weer vrijgegeven.

Die vreugde was echter maar van korte duur. Luca Ghiotto remde te laat in de tweede bocht na de herstart, tikte zijn voorvleugel kapot op Aitken en gleed vervolgens de afzetting in. Jordan King en Nikita Mazepin raakten vervolgens ook betrokken bij het incident, die De Vries in staat stelde om naar P3 te klimmen.

Aitken passeert De Vries voor P3

Een lange neutralisatie volgde en even leek het alsof de race achter de safety car beëindigd zou worden. De safety car kwam echter op tijd naar binnen om nog twee ronden op snelheid te kunnen rijden en daarbij liet De Vries zich in de luren leggen door Aitken. Bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde ging de junior van Renault aan de Nederlander voorbij voor het laatste plekje op het podium.

Latifi reed vervolgens redelijk onbedreigd naar de zege. Correa pakte de tweede positie en hoefde zich in de laatste ronde niet al te hard te verdedigen ten opzichte van Aitken. Achter De Vries werkte Mick Schumacher zich door alle incidenten knap op van P19 naar de vijfde positie, voor Sergio Sette Camara en Dorian Boccolacci. Het laatste puntje ging naar Gelael, die Callum Ilott op de lijn maar nipt voorbleef.

  De Vries rijd juist prima. Hij heeft eindelijk geleerd zijn koppie erbij te houden. Voorlopig scoort hij nog steeds belangrijke punten voor het kampioenschap. Voorheen zou hij nog alles geriskeerd hebben in de race en voortijdig zijn banden opgerookt hebben. Nee, de Vries kan nog steeds meestrijden.

  Ja, hij haalt geen rare fratsen meer uit. Das een vooruitgang.
  
  Maar laat zich wel kinderlijk eenvoudig de kaas van het brood eten, en lijkt zijn bandenmanagement ook nog steeds niet op orde te hebben.
  
  Op deze wijze gaat hij geen titel pakken!

  Zoals Latifi laat zien is consistent rijden in deze klasse de sleutel. Geen do or die moves voor een zege, pak zoveel mogelijk punten waar je kunt. Ghiotto werd op de Engelse stream de hemel in geprezen tot hij in de muur hing. En volgens mij weet Nyck ook wel dat hij geen F1 meer gaat rijden (hij is ook weg bij Mclaren Dat ART stoeltje heeft Nyck met Gelael's KFC sponsoring als dankje wel voor vorig jaar gekocht. ), maar sinds Albon door STR is opgepikt hoopt bijna iedereen nu op zo'n scenario. Latifi zit te hopen dat Kubica er uit vliegt,eind dit jaar, Ghiotto hoopt dat de Ferrari familie naar hem omkijkt en Jordan King's vader is intussen toegetreden tot de inner circle bij Haas omdat hij voor de sponsor Rich Energy is gaan werken.

Vette race gezien. Alleen dat geouwehoer met het wegtakelen van de bolides is wel echt heel slecht.
