De Vries opent weekend in Frankrijk met tweede positie in vrije training

Nyck de Vries heeft de jacht op de leiding in het Formule 2-kampioenschap geopend met een tweede tijd in de vrije training. De coureur van ART moest alleen Sergio Sette Camara voor zich dulden.

Sette Camara ging in de laatste minuten van de sessie naar een 1:44.009, waarmee hij zijn eigen snelste tijd van dat moment met ruim een halve seconde verbeterde. Niemand anders kon die versnelling van de DAMS-coureur volgen, want De Vries moest zich op precies zes tienden van een seconde achterstand tevredenstellen met de tweede tijd.

Achter Sette Camara waren de verschillen wel wat kleiner. Luca Ghiotto gaf op de derde positie slechts een halve tiende toe op de tijd van De Vries. Daarachter volgde het Ferrari Driver Academy-duo Mick Schumacher en Callum Ilott, die beiden ook in de buurt van de tijd van De Vries . UNI Virtuosi en Prema bezetten posities 3 en 4, maar ook 6 en 7 met Guanyu Zhou en Sean Gelael.

Moeilijke sessie voor Latifi en MP Motorsport

Kampioenschapsleider Nicholas Latifi, die een voorsprong van een punt op De Vries verdedigt in Frankrijk, had een lastige eerste sessie. Eerder vandaag kwam hij nog in actie voor Williams in de eerste Formule 1-training op Paul Ricard, maar in de vrije training van de Formule 2 kon hij het tempo van teamgenoot Sette Camara niet volgen. Op een seconde achterstand eindigde Latifi op P8. De top 10 wordt afgerond door Ralph Boschung en Nobuharu Matsushita.

Voor MP Motorsport en BWT Arden werd het een sessie om snel te vergeten. Jordan King keerde na zijn Indy 500-avontuur terug achter het stuur bij het Nederlandse team, maar hij kwam niet verder dan P17. Hij bleef Anthoine Hubert en Tatiana Calderon voor, terwijl Mahaveer Raghunathan wederom de langzaamste was. De Indiër gaf liefst 7,9 seconden toe op Sette Camara.

  Het leidt gelukkig wel af van Calderon's matige prestaties. Hopelijk krijgt Chadwick snel een F2 zitje zodat we niet met de mythe zitten dat vrouwen te langzaam zijn voor de racerij, omdat ze met een non-talent als dat rondrijden daar.
  
  Met een beetje geluk rijdt Visser zich ook in de kijker voor de F2, dankzij haar prestaties t.o.v. Chadwick.
