De Vries achter Latifi en Sette Camara derde in vrije training in Sochi

Nyck de Vries is zijn jacht op de Formule 2-titel op goede wijze gestart. De Nederlander reed de derde tijd tijdens de vrije training in Rusland, maar hij moest wel toezien dat concurrent Nicholas Latifi de snelste tijd reed.

Met twee podiumplaatsen op Monza deed De Vries goede zaken in de titelstrijd, mede doordat Latifi geen enkel punt scoorde in Italië. De Canadees van DAMS lijkt zich in Sochi echter weer te herstellen, want in de vrije training was hij de snelste. Het Franse team lijkt er sowieso goed bij te zitten, want Sergio Sette Camara reed de tweede tijd. Hij gaf drie tienden toe op Latifi, terwijl De Vries op P3 een halve seconde langzamer was.

Luca Ghiotto en Nobuharu Matsushita positioneerden zich op de vierde en vijfde positie, terwijl Louis Deletraz namens Carlin achter zijn teamgenoot plaatsnam op de zesde plek. Jack Aitken, die dit weekend met het helmontwerp van Anthoine Hubert rijdt, werd zevende, gevolgd door Callum Ilott, Nikita Mazepin en Mick Schumacher op P10.

Matevos Isaakyan maakt in Rusland zijn Formule 2-debuut bij Sauber Junior Team by Charouz en hij deed het niet onaardig. Hij noteerde de zestiende tijd, waarmee hij Tatiana Calderon, Marino Sato en Mahaveer Raghunathan voor wist te blijven. Ook was hij sneller dan landgenoot Artem Markelov. De Rus keert dit weekend terug in de Formule 2 bij BWT Arden, waar hij Hubert tot het einde van het seizoen vervangt.

Toch vind ik nu op 1 of andere reden het kampioenschap minder spannend omdat Nyck toch al FE gaat rijden.

  Yup. Het boeit mij op dit moment weinig meer. Kan alleen hopen op een of andere rare verassing. Maar dat lijkt me sterk.
