MP Motorsport trekt Matsushita aan voor Formule 2-seizoen

Nobuharu Matsushita blijft nog een jaartje hangen in de Formule 2. De Japanner wordt in 2020 de teamgenoot van de reeds aangekondigde Felipe Drugovich bij MP Motorsport.

Met Matsushita haalt MP Motorsport met recht een ervaren coureur binnen. Hij debuteerde in 2015 in de GP2 Series bij ART Grand Prix, het team waar hij ook in 2016 en 2017 actief was. Daarna keerde Matsushita terug naar zijn thuisland voor een jaar in de Super Formula, maar in 2019 keerde hij terug in de Formule 2. In 2020 blijft de Japanner actief in die klasse, maar hij wisselt dus wel van Carlin naar MP Motorsport.

Niet alleen heeft Matsushita de nodige ervaring, ook heeft hij in de afgelopen jaren redelijk wat successen behaald in de Formule 2. Nooit deed hij echt mee om de titel, maar in totaal wist hij wel zes races te winnen (GP2 en F2 gecombineerd). Daarnaast stond hij in totaal negen keer op het podium. De beste klassering van Matsushita in de Formule 2 is de zesde positie, die hij in zowel 2017 als 2019 behaalde.

Bij MP Motorsport wordt Matsushita de teamgenoot van nieuwkomer Drugovich. De Braziliaan kwam vorig seizoen nog uit voor Carlin Buzz in de FIA Formule 3. In dat kampioenschap pakte Drugovich slechts acht punten, waarmee hij zestiende werd in de titelstrijd.
