Shwartzman over thuisrace: "Sotsji is voor mij een speciale plek"

De aankomende wedstrijden in Sotsji zijn voor Formule 2-coureur Robert Shwartzman extra speciaal. Vorig jaar sleepte de 21-jarige in het front van zijn thuispubliek de Formule 3-titel binnen. Dit jaar doet de Prema-coureur weer mee om het kampioenschap. Op dit moment staat de Rus vierde met 21 punten achterstand op de leider en teamgenoot, Mick Schumacher.

Shwartzman heeft zin in dit weekend: "Het is goed om terug te zijn", zegt de in Sint-Petersburg geboren coureur. "Ik heb goede herinneringen hier en de support van de Russische fans maakt het voor mij alleen maar specialer." Voor de Prema-coureur is het rijden op Sotsji een extra boost. "Natuurlijk ben ik gemotiveerd voor elke baan, maar het racen voor familie, vrienden en het thuispubliek geeft een fantastisch gevoel. Meer dan ergens anders hoop je op een goed resultaat."

De jonge rijder komt niet met teveel hoogmoed naar de badplaats. "Het hebben van positieve herinneringen geeft niet automatisch meer zelfvertrouwen, maar het is wel altijd fijn om terug te komen naar een ciruit die jou goed ligt." De enige keer dat de 21-jarige rijder op deze baan reed was vorig jaar in de F3. "Ik reed er met veel plezier. Hopelijk wordt dat hetzelfde met de F2-bolides."

Ondanks een frustrerend weekend in Italië, ging Shwartzman met een positief gevoel weg. "Mugello was teleurstellend vanwege technische problemen, maar het tempo was goed tijdens de race. Ik genoot van de wedstrijd op zondag. Ik probeerde zoveel mogelijk auto's in te halen", aldus de Rus. Voor de komende twee races geeft dat voor hem zelfvertrouwen. "Met de snelheid die wij hebben, zouden wij kunnen terugslaan."

Nou laat maar wat zien... Schwartzman en Illot zitten immers nu in de achtervolgende positie met hun toch wel meer spectaculaire en snellere momenten... Hun mindere zijn alleen een heel stuk minder dan hun voorganger.
