Hoofdrace: Pourchaire wint met overmacht in Bahrein, Verschoor vijfde

De vice-kampioen van 2022 Théo Pourchaire won met overmacht de hoofdrace op het Bahrein International Circuit. De Fransman won met 19 seconden voorsprong op de winnaar van de sprintrace Ralph Boschung.

Zane Maloney deed knap staaltje inhaalwerk van P18 en eiste de laatste podiumplaats op. Richard werd knap vijfde nadat de Nederlander in de rondte ging in de eerste ronde.

France Domination

Pourchaire vanaf poleposition had een sterke start en behield de leiding. Kush Maini had een raketstart en schoot vanaf de zesde plaats op de grid naar de tweede plaats in de eerste bocht.

Verschoor spinde na een tik en dat zorgde voor een dominee-effect met de nodige tavage. De Nederlander kwam weer op gang maar was laatste toen de Safety Car werd ingezet. De als twaalfde gestarte Oliver Bearman profiteerde, vermeed de chaos en bereikte de vierde plaats.

De eerste pitstops werden gemaakt in ronde 11. Na de verplichte bandenwissel leidde Pourchaire het veld met twaalf seconden voorsprong op Boschung, Leclerc, Maini en Bearman.

Leclerc stond onder druk van Maini. De DAMS-coureur remde diep voor bocht 10, waardoor Maini het momentum kreeg op het daaropvolgende DRS-rechte stuk om derde te worden. Bearman en Iwasa stapelden duwden Leclerc verder naar achteren.

De aanstormende Maloney was vol vertrouwen en zette een aanval op Iwasa in bocht 11 in ronde 26 van de 32. Op zijn zachtere en betere banden pakte hij ook de vierde plaats van Bearman af en zou uiteindelijk derde wonnen.

Verschoor klom in ronde 29 weer op naar de punten en ging als een mes door een pakje boter. Verschoor passeerde Leclerc in de laatste ronde om een PP5-finish te claimen en tegelijkertijd de snelste ronde te pakken.

Ralph Boschung leidt het kampioenschap dankzij de winst bij de sprintrace en een tweede plek in de hoofdrace. De volgende confrontatie is in Melbourne in het weekend van 2 april.

  Jammer dat ze hem al heel vroeg uit het Red Bul programma gegooid hebben.
  Ik begrijp ook niet waarom die beslissing al zo snel genomen was. Want op eigen kracht laat hij in minder materiaal heel aardige dingen zien.
  
  Denk dat Verschoor ook een betere optie had kunnen zijn dan de Vries voor AT.
  In elk geval op het gebied van potentie. Ik geloof dat hij verder geen echte banden heeft met een F1 team momenteel. En dat terwijl hij al meerdere malen goed is opgevallen.
  
  Laten we hopen dat het geen verhaal "Frijns" wordt. Veel talent, potentie om een goede F1 rijder te worden, maar geen goede (financiele) backing en geen goede ingang tot F1.... Zou eeuwig zonde zijn. Denk dat Verschoor momenteel het grootste jonge talent uit Nederland is.
