Prema slaat opnieuw dubbelslag in eerste race op Red Bull Ring

Roberto Merhi heeft zojuist zijn leiding in het kampioenschap verstevigd. De Spanjaard was in de eerste race op de Red Bull Ring zijn teamgenoot Daniel Juncadella te snel af. Hiermee heeft Prema opnieuw een dubbelzege te pakken. Marco Wittmann eindigde voor Signature als derde.

Merhi kwam beter weg dan teamgenoot en polesitter Daniel Juncadella en nam in de eerste bocht meteen de leiding over. Na drie ronden had de Spanjaard al een voorsprong opgebouwd van 1,6 seconden. Juncadella kwam nog wel dichterbij door zes geweldige ronden achter elkaar, maar Merhi liet nooit meer dan een tiende liggen en kwam alsnog 1,1 seconden voor zijn teammaat over de finish.

Vice-kampioen van 2010 Marco Wittmann eindigde als derde. Hij moest echter wel al acht seconden toegeven op de leidende Prema-bolides. Felix Rosenqvist lag lange tijd vierde, maar werd na tien ronden voorbij gereden door teamgenoot Nigel Melker. Rosenqvist ging te wijd, viel terug tot de negende plaats en moest later in de race opgeven met een gebroken achterwielophanging.

Melker moest zijn positie daarna hevig verdedigen tegen Tom Dillmann, maar slaagde daar niet geheel in. De Nederlander zag Dillmann langszij komen en hij eindigde als vierde. Melker kwam als vijfde over de streep, gevolgd door Daniel Abt, Laurens Vanthoor en Gianmarco Raimondo. De nieuwe rijder van Prema reed bijna de hele race in de versnellingsbak van de Belg, maar kon er niet voorbij komen.
