Nigel Melker erft zege uit eerste race na acht penalty's

Nigel Melker heeft de eerste Formule 3-race op de Norisring alsnog op zijn naam gekregen. De Nederlander eindigde in die race vanochtend als derde, achter Marco Wittmann en winnaar Laurens Vanthoor. De wedstrijdleiding deelde na afloop echter acht penalty's uit, waarna Melker als winnaar uit de bus kwam.

Vanthoor én Wittmann werden beiden bestraft met dertig seconden omdat zij niet genoeg afgeremd zouden hebben tijdens een gele vlag-situatie. Hierdoor schoof Melker op naar de eerste positie. Verder zijn ook Roberto Merhi, Jimmy Eriksson, Kimiya Sato, Kuba Giermaziak, Alon Day and Carlos Munoz bestraft met dertig seconden. Melker was daardoor en enige coureur die rijdend over de finish kwam die geen straf ontving.

"Ik voelde al alsof ik harder afremde dan de andere coureurs", vertelde Melker na afloop van de race. "Dat kostte mij erg veel tijd en daardoor konden de coureurs achter mij me snel bijhalen."
