Heidfeld keert terug na blessureleed

Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Nick Heidfeld keert vandaag, tegen de verwachting in, terug in de Formule E. De Duitser liep een blessure op aan zijn pols na een vreemde crash tijdens de Formule E race in Putraya en miste de race in Punta del Este. Heidfeld moest geopereerd worden en kreeg twee pinnen in zijn hand. De pinnen werden begin januari verwijderd en Heidfeld dacht nog niet klaar te zijn voor een terugkeer vanwege verminderde kracht in zijn hand.

Na een test in de simulator van zijn team Mahindra en een test in een oude GP2-auto in Valencia vorige week was Heidfeld voldoende overtuigd om naar Argentinië af te reizen om deel te nemen aan de ePrix van Buenos Aires. Heidfeld deed gisteren mee aan de shakedown van het weekend en heeft op basis daarvan besloten de rest van het weekend ook te racen. Heidfeld: "Ik meende een kans te maken om hier te racen, hoewel mijn therapeut daar nog niet van overtuigd was. De test in een oude GP2-auto vorige week in Valencia liet echter zien dat ik er klaar voor was. Ik had geen pijn tijdens die test, ik reed mijn rondjes zonder grote problemen. Ik reed niet op de limiet, maar het was voldoende om hier naar toe te reizen en op basis van de shakedown een definitieve beslissing te nemen."

Mahindra had voor het weekend Adam Caroll opgeroepen als vervanger van Heidfeld. Heidfeld zal nu zelf in actie komen. Heidfeld geeft wel aan dat de stuuruitslag van een Formule E-auto groter is dan andere eenzitters en dat de hobbels op het circuit in Buenos Aires ook een uitdaging zullen gaan vormen.
