Buemi en Di Grassi tippen Jose Maria Lopez voor succes in Formule E

Tweevoudig WTCC-kampioen José Maria Lopez begint later dit jaar aan het nieuwe Formule E-seizoen met DS Virgin Racing. De nummers één en twee van het afgelopen seizoen geloven dat Lopez ook in de elektrische raceklasse succes kan boeken.

Na drie seizoenen WTCC bij Citroën stopt Lopez daarmee na dit seizoen, om zich bij zustermerk DS te gaan focussen op de Formule E. Sinds 2006 heeft de Argentijn niet meer in een single seater gereden, maar afgelopen zomer testte hij al eens met een Formule E-bolide van DS Virgin. Regerend kampioen Sebastien Buemi vertelde Autosport dat hij denkt dat Lopez meteen voor de zeges kan strijden.

"Afgelopen seizoen was het team al goed met Sam Bird, en ik verwacht dat ze dit jaar weer sterk zullen zijn. Lopez zal een aantal races moeten wennen, want het is compleet iets anders dan voor jezelf testen. Ik denk echter dat hij maar twee races nodig zal hebben om in vorm te raken."

Lucas di Grassi reed enkele jaren samen met Lopez in het opleidingsprogramma van Renault. "Ik heb hem hoog zitten. Hij is de beste toerwagenrijder ter wereld en een wereldkampioen verwelkomen in de serie is altijd goed. Hij is een goede toevoeging aan het kampioenschap, ook omdat we in Argentinië rijden. Daar is hij beroemd, want hij is de beste Argentijnse coureur van het moment. Hij is ervaren en in de bloei van zijn carrière. Hij zal erg competitief zijn en snel leren."
