Sam Bird wint eerste race in Hong Kong, Di Grassi en Buemi stellen teleur

De eerste race van het vierde Formule E-seizoen is een prooi geworden voor Sam Bird. De Brit bleeft Jean-Eric Vergne en Nick Heidfeld voor. Titelkandidaten Sebastien Buemi en Lucas di Grassi stelden teleur: beide coureurs kenden problemen in de race en scoorden geen punten. De race verliep chaotisch en de wedstrijdleiding zag zich genoodzaakt de rode vlag te zwaaien nadat Felix Rosenqvist en Andre Lotterer de baan blokkeerden.

Het zwaaien van de rode vlag is een historisch moment in de elektrische raceklasse: nooit eerder werd een race stilgelegd. Bij de start bleef iedereen uit de problemen, maar even later was het alsnog raak. Felix Rosenqvist schatte de breedte van de baan verkeerd in bij een inhaalactie en dat zorgde ervoor dat Andre Lotterer tegen de muur aan reed en voor een blokkade zorgde.

Na de herstart was de chaos nog niet voorbij. Kort na de herstart pakte Bird de leiding over van Jean-Eric Vergne. Bij de pitstop ging het echter volledig mis voor Bird. Bird remde zeer laat bij het binnenrijden van zijn garage en reed vervolgens bijna zijn hele crew omver. Het leverde Bird een straf op en de kans op de zege leek te zijn verkeken.

De pitsstraat in Hong Kong is een van de kortere van het jaar en de doorrijstraf leverde Bird niet per se een nadeel op. Na het inlossen van de straf kwam Bird pal voor Vergne weer de baan op en wist hij vervolgens onbedreigd naar de zege te rijden. Vergne leek veilig voor de tweede plaats, maar moest in de slotfase nog aardig verdedigen ten opzichte van Mahindra-coureur Nick Heidfeld.

Voor Sebastien Buemi en Lucas di Grassi werd het een teleurstellende seizoensopener. Het duo, dat de afgelopen twee seizoen streed om de titel kon geen vuist maken in de haven van Hong Kong. Di Grassi worstelde met de handeling van de auto en finishte teleurstellend als achttiende. Sebastien Buemi kende gedurende de race een technisch probleem, wist zijn auto te herstarten, maar kwam niet verder dan een twaalfde plaats.

De tweede race in Hong Kong start morgenvroeg om 08:00 uur.

Ik vond de hele race teleurstellend, dat "circuit" is sowieso een aanfluiting, je kan niet eens normaal starten zonder rode vlag en inhalen is bijna onmogelijk zonder elkaar te raken.

Ik vond de hele race teleurstellend, dat "circuit" is sowieso een aanfluiting, je kan niet eens normaal starten zonder rode vlag en inhalen is bijna onmogelijk zonder elkaar te raken.

verder zijn de auto's nog steeds te langzaam, maar zo vertelde de commentator: metd e nieuwe accupaketten van volgend jaar zouden ze nog maar net iets minder vermogen moeten hebben dan de GP3: eeeh, WAT? na zoveel jaar ontwikkeling zijn ze dan nog steeds langzamer dan de GP3?

  Ontwikkeling allemaal ontwikkeling. Over 10 jaar zou het toch mogelijk moeten zijn om tussen de F2 en de F1 in te moeten zitten.

Is Sam Bird nou twee keer gestraft voor hetzelfde incident? Bertje apart van de FIA en (hoe kan het ook anders) inconsequent als je kijkt wat er gebeurt in de F1.
