Formule E draaide bescheiden winst in vijfde seizoen

De Formule E heeft in haar vijfde seizoen eindelijk winst geboekt. De winst van één miljoen dollar was grotendeels te danken aan enorme stijging van de inkomsten en de sponsoring.

Eind november begint de Formule E aan het zesde seizoen in het bestaan van de klasse, nadat Jean-Eric Vergne zijn titel met succes wist te verdedigen in 2018-19. Niet alleen voor Vergne was het een mooi jaar, ook voor de klasse zelf was dat het geval. De inkomsten van de klasse stegen met 50 procent naar ruim 220 miljoen dollar. De winst van het bedrijf kwam uiteindelijk op iets meer dan één miljoen dollar uit.

Het verschil met de voorgaande jaren was groot. Sinds de oprichting van de klasse in 2014 werd er nog niet eerder een winst geboekt. Het seizoen 2017-18, het vierde seizoen, leverde bijvoorbeeld een verlies van 26,4 miljoen dollar op. De inkomsten uit sponsoring met 25 procent in het vijfde seizoen, terwijl het televisiepubliek met 24 procent groeide naar 411 miljoen kijkers.

CEO Agag ziet groei exponentieel stijgen

Alejandro Agag, de oprichter en CEO van de Formule E, ziet een veelbelovend patroon voor zijn klasse. "Net als de nieuwe generatie auto's zelf gaat het groeien sneller en sneller. De progressie die we in zo'n korte periode geboekt hebben is erg hoopgevend en wordt ook gereflecteerd in inkomsten van recordhoogte. Deze kwamen voor het eerst boven de 200 miljoen euro uit."

In november gaat het zesde seizoen van de Formule E van start met de ePrix van Ad Diriyah in Saudi-Arabië. Dit jaar zullen er twee Nederlanders aan de start verschijnen: Robin Frijns mag aanblijven bij Envision Virgin Racing, terwijl Nyck de Vries de kans krijgt om zich als fabriekscoureur te bewijzen bij het debuterende Mercedes.

Er wordt alleen niet bij vermeld dat de organiserende steden megaverliezen lijden door tegenvallende bezoekersaantallen en veel gezeur mbt overlast in de centra van deze steden. Verschillende steden zijn al afgehaakt.

  MisterT niet... hij heeft waarschijnlijk ooit een bericht gelezen over London... De stad maakte in de eerste 2 jaar inderdaad giga verliezen maar de klasse was ook niet t staat van dienst als wat het nu is. De bevolking had vervolgens de race voor seizoen 3 gedwarsboomd. Ook Zurich en Bern hadden moeite met Formule E de laatste 2 jaren, maar daar heerst de racecultuur niet echt zoals in de rest van Europa... mede door de jarenlange ban op auto/motorsport. Formule E heeft een waslijst aan steden die mee willen doen waaronder Eindhoven bijvoorbeeld. London keert overigens volgend jaar terug op een plek waar het ongemak (4 dagen verkeersongemak) voor de (zeurende) bewoners die gewoon gratis entertainment kunnen zijn vanaf hun woning, minder aan de orde is.

Sowieso leuk dat zowel de Vries, Frijns en Vandoorne op de grid staan.

In het begin kon de klasse mij niet bekoren, maar in afwezigheid van F1 of motoGP races vind ik best aaridg om te volgen. En met Mercedes die zich gekoppeld hebben aan de serie denk ik dat steeds meer commerciele partijen interesse zullen krijgen in deze klasse.

  Waarom alleen Mercedes noemen? HWA reed er afgelopen jaar al (Mercedes in disguise)
  
  BMW rijdt net als Audi al een tijd mee, Porsche is nieuw dit jaar (om het bij de Duitse inbreng te houden). Hoezo zou dan net Mercedes het voor elkaar krijgen om meer commerciele partijen naar de FE te trekken?
  
  Serieuze vraag hoor, niet bedoeld als zeikerig. Ben echt beniewd.

  En Renault deed vanaf het begin al mee en is sinds dit jaar vervangen door zusterbedrijf Nissan, en dan hebben we ook nog Jaguar en DS(Citroën) die al jaren meedoen

  StevenQ Mahindra is ook gewoon een miljoenen producent in auto's haha. Groot merk waarvan ik dacht dat ze alleen scooters en motoren bouwden maar in India dus een gigant in mobiliteit, waaronder auto's.
