Coronavirus treft eerste races Formule E in 2021

Het coronavirus treft ook de Formule E-kalender voor 2021. De eerste races in Mexico en China worden uitgesteld, omdat het virus het nog niet toelaat om af te reizen naar die landen. De Formule E heeft nog geen exacte nieuwe datums gegeven. Op 13 februari zou de Formule E naar Mexico-stad gaan en op 13 maart hoopte het elektrische autosport event in Sanya te kunnen plaatsvinden, maar deze races gaan niet door.

Goed nieuws voor Chili, want die mogen nu op 16 en 17 januari een race organiseren, wel achter gesloten deuren. De volgende twee rondes vinden plaats op 26 en 27 februari in Diriyah, Saoedi-Arabië. De organisatoren hopen ook toeschouwers te mogen verwelkomen. Op de voorlopige kalender van de Formule E staan tussen april en juli 2021 evenementen gepland in Rome, Parijs, Monaco, Seoul, Berlijn, Londen en New York.

Het 2019/2020-seizoen werd hard getroffen want er gingen veel races niet door. Hierdoor besloot de organisatie op het Tempelhof in Berlijn een aantal races te houden achter gesloten deuren. "We zijn gefocust op het racen in zoveel mogelijk van onze internationale gaststeden, waarbij we zo dicht mogelijk bij onze geplande en eerder aangekondigde kalender blijven", aldus een verklaring.

"Bij alle besluitvorming geven we prioriteit aan de gezondheid en veiligheid van ons personeel en de hele Formule E-gemeenschap van teams, fabrikanten, partners, coureurs en fans, evenals de burgers en inwoners van de steden waarin we racen. De Formule E zal blijven samenwerken met de lokale autoriteiten om de situatie in de gaten te houden en staat in constante communicatie met zijn gemeenschap van teams, fabrikanten, partners, omroepen en coureurs. De volgende reeks races wordt begin 2021 bevestigd. Alle kalenderupdates zijn onder voorbehoud van goedkeuring door de FIA World Motor Sport Council."
