Giovinazzi mag weer aan de bak: "Had slechts een maand voorbereidingstijd"

Antonio Giovinazzi is Formule 1-coureur af. De Italiaan kreeg geen contractverlenging bij het team van Alfa Romeo en leek uit te moeten kijken naar een nieuwe job. Gelukkig was daar het Formule E-team van Dragon/Penske dat Giovinazzi onderdak bood voor het aankomende seizoen.

Volgend weekend staat de eerste Formule E-race van het jaar weer op het programma, de elektrische raceklasse reist af naar Saoedi-Arabië voor de seizoensopener. Toch is zijn Formule 1-droom niet helemaal verdampt, hij blijft immers als reserve verbonden aan het team van Ferrari.

Voorbereidingstijd

Hij zal zich echter eerst moeten focussen op zijn debuut in Saoedi-Arabië. Door het afgelopen Formule 1-seizoen is zijn voorbereiding op zijn elektrische avontuur nogal kort. In gesprek met Motorsport.com is hij duidelijk: “Het grootste verschil is dat ik minder tijd had. Half december zat ik voor het laatst achter het stuur en volgende week reis ik af naar Saoedi-Arabië voor de Formule E. Ik had dus een maand voorbereidingstijd.”

Trainen

De langharige Italiaan verwacht echter weinig aanpassingsproblemen. Op de punten waarop hij zich moest aanpassen heeft hij dat al gedaan: “Mijn huidige trainingsschema is te vergelijken met die van voorheen. Er zijn wel een aantal dingetjes anders. In de Formule E staat er minder druk op de nek maar het sturen is hier wat zwaarder. Daar heb ik dus meer op getraind.”
