Transfer in Formule E-top: Cassidy van Envision naar Jaguar

Slechts een week nadat hij moest toezien hoe grote rivaal Jake Dennis met de Formule E-titel aan de haal ging, heeft vicekampioen Nick Cassidy zijn plannen voor het volgende seizoen in de elektrische klasse gepresenteerd. De Nieuw-Zeelander, die afgelopen jaren uitkwam voor het team Envision, verdedigt vanaf 2024 de kleuren van het fabrieksteam van Jaguar.

Aldaar schuift Cassidy aan naast landgenoot Mitch Evans, die in het laatste weekend van juli nog een ePrix in het Londense ExCeL op zijn naam wist te schrijven. Jaguar kon een vrije stoel aanbieden na het gedwongen vertrek van Sam Bird, die moest vliegen nadat zijn aflopende contract niet werd verlengd. Bird zal volgens de geruchten uitwijken naar McLaren, waar op zijn beurt René Rast al na een jaartje weer vertrekt. Rast gaat namelijk zijn pijlen richten op een dienstverband in het World Endurance Championship, waarin hij de LMDh van BMW zal besturen.

De opengevallen plaats van Cassidy bij Envision, het team dat dankzij de Nieuw-Zeelandse coureur en zijn voormalige teammaat Sebastien Buemi voor de eerste keer in haar bestaan met de teamtitel aan de haal ging, wordt ingenomen door een oude bekende. Robin Frijns, die gisteren (maandag) nog zijn 32ste verjaardag vierde, keert na een jaartje afwezigheid alweer terug op het oude nest.

Het volgende seizoen in de Formule E - het jubileumjaar, aangezien de elektrische klasse in 2024 haar tiende verjaardag viert - wordt op 13 januari 2024 afgetrapt met een ePrix in Mexico. Het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is dan voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar gastheer van de seizoenouverture.
