Isaakyan pakt eerste zege in Formule V8, Beitske Visser zevende

De eerste Formule V8-race op het circuit van Jerez is gewonnen door de Russische debutant Matevos Isaakyan. Het werd een Russische feestje op Jerez, met landgenoot Egor Orudzhev als tweede. Matthieu Vaxiviere finishte de race als derde, terwijl Beitske Visser keurig zevende werd.

Bij de start was Isaakyan goed weg en profiteerde hij van een dramatische start van polesitter Jack Aitken. Lang kon Isaakyan niet genieten van de leiding, teamgenoot Vaxiviere nam de leiding over bij het ingaan van de eerste bocht. Lang leek het erop dat Vaxiviere de race ging winnen, maar een fout zorgde ervoor dat Isaakyan de leiding weer kon overnemen en onbedreigd naar zijn eerste zege kon rijden.

Vaxiviere werd ook nog gepasseerd door Egor Orudzhev. Orudzhev zette vervolgens de aanval in op Isaakyan en kwam aan de finish slechts een halve seconde tekort op zijn landgenoot. Tom Dillmann, leider in het kampioenschap, viel uit na een crash met titelrivaal Louis Deletraz. Deletraz werd na de race als schuldige aangewezen en kreeg een tijdstraf van tien seconden. De Zwitser finishte daardoor als elfde en scoorde net als Dillmann geen punten.

Beitske Visser kende een goede race en mocht met een zevende plaats weer wat punten bijschrijven. Morgen wordt de tweede race verreden. Dillmann gaat nog steeds aan de leiding in het kampioenschap.
