Alvaro Parente wint bij debuut, Nederlanders vallen uit

Alvaro Parente heeft een fantastische start meegemaakt van zijn GP2-carrière. De Renault World Series-kampioen heeft gisteren in Barcelona zijn debuutrace in de klasse op zijn naam geschreven. Zelfs grote druk van Bruno Senna kon hem niet van de wijs brengen.

Bij de start gaat het al mis. Polesitter Pastor Maldonado komt niet weg en moet later zijn wge vervolgen vanuit de pitstraat. In de eerste bocht gaat het goed mis. Christian Bakkerud, Parente's teamgenoot bij Super Nova, maakt contact met Ben Hanley. Roldan Rodriguez vliegt over Ho-Pin Tung heen en ook Mike Conway moet de strijd staken. De safety-car komt de baan op, maar heeft moeite om de leiders op te vangen omdat bijna iedereen binnenkomt voor de verplichte pitstop. Parente behoudt na zijn stop in de tweede ronde de leiding.

Bruno Senna heeft bij de pitstops de tweede plek overgenomen van Andi Zuber en maakt zich op voor een aanval op Parente. Bij de herstart in de zevende ronde slaagt Senna erin een slipstream te pakken, maar komt uiteindelijk niet voorbij de leider. Het hele vervolg van de race zal de Braziliaan in de nek van de Portugees blijven hangen, maar het zal niet genoeg zijn voor een inhaalmanouvre.

Romain Grosjean doet ook goede zaken. Hij start de race als elfde, baant zich een weg naar voren en finisht uiteindelijk als vijfde op acht seconden van Parente. Die vijfde plek was lange tijd voor Adrian Valles, maar de Spanjaard ruineert zijn banden en valt terug tot helemaal achteraan. Sebastian Buemi en Kamui Kobayashi profiteren en pakken de laatste punten. Valles rijdt nog wel de snelste ronde in de laatste ronde van de race, maar omdat hij niet in de toptien finisht wordt de thuisrijder niet beloond met een punt.

Zondagochtend wordt de tweede race verreden.
