Grosjean wint, Pantano uitgesloten van beide races

Romain Grosjean heeft zaterdagmiddag de eerste GP2-race in Spa-Francorchamps gewonnen. Hij haalt vijf ronden voor het einde Alvaro Parente in en loopt vervolgens nog dik vier seconden weg bij de nummer twee. Andi Zuber pakt de laatste podiumplek, gevolgd door teamgenoot Pastor Maldonado.

De race gaat van start achter de safety car, omdat vlak voor de start een regenbui het circuit blank heeft gezet. Bruno Senna leidt de race vanaf pole position. De Braziliaan heeft de punten hard nodig om dichterbi te komen aan Pantano in het kampioenschap. Het zit Senna echter weer niet mee. Bij het wegrijden na zijn pitstop raakt hij bijna de auto van Alberto Valerio. De stewards concluderen dat het team op een onveilig moment heeft weggestuurd en bestraft hem met een drive-through-penalty. De Braziliaan valt terug tot achterin het veld, maar finisht uiteindelijk als twaalfde.

Senna's geluk is dat Pantano het eigenlijk nog veel slechter vergaat. Door een klein kortstondig motorprobleem tijdens een safety car-periode valt hij terug naar de tiende plek, maar weet zich te herstellen tot een achtste plek. In de laatste ronde gaat het echter mis. Bij een inhaalpoging op Rodriguez rijdt hij zichzelf uit de race door Lucas di Grassi te raken.

Davide Valsecchi maakt zijn tweede grote crash van het jaar mee. In de tiende ronde vliegt hij hard de bandenstapels in bij Stavelot en wordt naar het ziekenhuis gevlogen voor verder onderzoek. In eerste instantie lijken de verwondingen mee te vallen.

Na de race kreeg het resultaat van Pantano nog een heftig staartje. De stewards oordeelden dat Pantano roekeloos had gereden en bovendien had ingehaald tijdens een safety car-periode en besloten hem uit te sluiten van beide races op Spa-Francorchamps. Andi Zuber wordt eveneens uit de uitslag geschrapt vanwege onreglementaire reparaties aan zijn wagen. Teamgenoot Pastor Maldonado klimt daardoor naar de derde plek.

Pantano mag dus niet starten in de tweede race op zondagochtend, waardoor Senna een open kans krijgt veel punten goed te maken. Hij zal echter niet vooraan starten. De pole position is weggelegd voor Jerome d'Ambrosio.
