Marcus Ericsson wint sprintrace, Van der Garde tweede

Marcus Ericsson heeft voor het eerst een GP2-race op zijn naam weten te schrijven. De Zweed pakte bij de start de leiding door bij de start Michael Herck te verschalken. Giedo van der Garde finishte als tweede, Herck derde. De race werd nog opgeschrikt door een zware crash van Josef kral.

Het feest bij het team van Ericsson, Super Nova, zal wellicht wat minder groot zijn, aangezien teamgenoot Kral een zware klapper te voorduren kreeg. De Tsjech reed in de derde ronde van de race tegen de achterkant van Rodolfo Gonzalez aan en werd gelanceerd. Kral vloog enkele meters hoog door de lucht en kwam met een harde klap terug op het asfalt waarna zijn auto nog met hoge snelheid de bandenstapels ingleed. Kral was bij bewust zijn, maar werd overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis. Kral klaagde over pijn in zijn rug en rechter arm.

Na een lange safety car periode behield Ericsson de leiding, maar voelde constant de hete adem van Van der Garde, die het gat nooit groter liet worden dan een seconde. Achter Ericsson, Van der Garde en Herck, waren het Pastor Maldonado, Charles Pic en Davide Valsecchi die de laatste punten pakte.

Sergio Perez, teamgenoot van Van der Garde werd net als gisteren van achteren aangetikt, waardoor de Addax coureur kansloos was voor punten.

In het klassement heeft Van der Garde goede zaken gedaan. De Nederlander staat nu tweede achter Maldonado.
