Pastor Maldonado wint eerste GP2-race in Hockenheim

Pastor Maldonado heeft zijn leiding in het kampioenschap verstevigd met een overwinning in de hoofdrace op de Hockenheimring. De Rapax-coureur bleef Sergio Perez voor, terwijl Charles Pic de laatste podiumplaats pakte.

Polesitter Pic kwam slecht weg bij de start en zo kon kampioenschapsleider Maldonado de Fransman al passeren. Vanaf dat moment heeft Maldonado elke ronde aan kop gereden, behalve tijdens de pitstop. Sergio Perez reed in de eerste stint nog vlak achter zijn titelrivaal aan, maar moest na de stops afhaken. Uiteindelijk reed de Mexicaan 3,8 seconden na Maldonado over de finish.

Pic eindigde als derde, op de voet gevolgd door Dani Clos. ART-coureur Jules Bianchi reed de snelste ronde van de race, maar eindigde op de vijfde positie. Marcus Ericsson, Adrian Zaugg en Oliver Turvey pakten de laatste punten.

Giedo van der Garde kende geen goede race. In de beginfase werd de Nederlander aangetikt door Sam Bird, die daarvoor bestraft werd met een drive trough-penalty, en hij kwam gewoon snelheid tekort. Van der Garde eindigde als twaafde. Ook voor Ho-Pin Tung was het een race om snel te vergeten. De Nederlandse Chinees reed in de eerste bocht zijn voorvleugel eraf en kon na negen ronden al uitstappen. Teamgenoot Romain Grosjean eindigde op drie ronden achterstand als laatste, nadat hij geraakt werd door Christian Vietoris en een extra bezoek aan de pitcrew moest brengen.
