Gasly opent als snelste, De Jong achttiende

De eerste en enige vrije training van het GP2-weekend op de Hungaroring is door Pierre Gasly als snelste afgesloten. Het Red Bull-talent, uitkomend voor het Prema Powerteam was vier tienden sneller dan Alex Lynn, de ontwikkelingscoureur van het Williams Formule 1-team. Daniel de Jong eindigde in de bolide van MP Motorsport op een achttiende plaats.

Waar de Formule 1 begon op een vochtige baan hadden de heren in de GP2 het geluk dat de baan al volledig was opgedroogd en de zon volop scheen. Net als bij de Formule 1 deden de sensoren in de kerbs hun werk, veel coureurs gingen te wijd in de vierde bocht en de elfde bocht.

Incidenten waren er in de sessie van 45 minuten niet. Een aantal coureurs maakte wel een uitstapje, maar over het algemeen werkten de heren hun voorbereiding op de kwalificatie en twee races in alle rust af. Gasly reed zijn tijd al vroeg in de sessie en het lukte niemand meer om daar nog onder te duiken.

Oliver Rowland, de leider in het kampioenschap, sloot de sessie af zevende plaats. Zoals altijd zat het dicht bij elkaar, alle coureurs bleven binnen 2,6 seconden van de snelste tijd. De kwalificatie voor de hoofdrace wordt vanmiddag na de vrije training van de Formule 1 verreden.
