Pastor Maldonado verslaat Parente in eerste GP2-race

Pastor Maldonado heeft zich bijna verzekerd van zijn eerste GP2-titel. De Venezolaan bleef tijdens de hoofdrace Alvaro Parente net voor. Romain Grosjean, die dit weekend de plaats inneemt van Ho-Pin Tung, eindigde als derde.

De race begon op een droge baan waarbij polesitter Jerome D'Ambrosio de grootst mogelijke moeite had om Maldonado achetr zich te houden. Wat verder naar achteren kwamen Sam Bird en Dani Clos met elkaar in aanraking waardoor de Safety Car de baan op werd gestuurd. Op dat moment reed Giedo van der Garde al twaalfde, nadat hij van de 24e startplaats kwam.

Ook bij de herstart bleef D'Ambrosio voor Maldonado rijden en dit bleef zo tot de pitstops. Beide coureurs kwamen tegelijk naar binnen, waarbij Maldonado een snellere stop had dan de Belg. De kampioenschapsleider nam de leiding over, maar enkele ronden later had D'Ambrosio hem alweer gepasseerd. Maldonado was wat snelheid verloren en ging niet echt meer lekker. D'Ambrosio kende echter ook pech en moest zijn auto met problemen langs de kant zetten.

Ondertussen had Maldonado dus weer de leiding in handen, nadat Alvaro Parente, die als een van de laatste coureurs een stop maakte, terugviel naar de tweede plaats. De Portugees kwam snel weer dichterbij aan Maldonado, maar kwam op de finish uiteindelijk enkele tienden tekort. Romain Grosjean reed een solide race voor DAMS en kwam als derde over de finish, voor landgenoot Charles Pic.

Luca Filippi pakte de vijfde plaats, terwijl Oliver Turvey nog net Sergio Perez achter zich wist te houden. Perez had eerder in de race nog een gevecht met teamgenoot Giedo van der Garde die daarbij even over het gras moest en wat tijd verloor. De Nederlander kwam uiteindelijk als negende over de finish, vlak achter Rodolfo Gonzalez die hiermee de pole voor de tweede race pakte.
